Can you help the Reading Grandies?
The Book Club committee is trying to help in raising the literacy age of children in Albany. Some children come to school having never opened a book or listened to a story from a book. They get a lot of screen time, but print is not part of this activity. Did you know that 44% of Australians read at a level below the required success rate for finding meaningful employment and success in our society? We have started a group called “Reading Grandies”. Both men and women are welcome to join. We go into schools and read to children ‘most at risk’ from all ages and stages. If you can spare just one hour per week, we would love your help.
Please contact us through our page or email [email protected] to register your interest.

Our very committed committee meets every second month. On the agenda at our recent meeting was some AGM preparation, a discussion about replacing some lost or damaged books and our next newsletter!
We’re always looking for committee members so if you have any interest in joining us please reach out.

New book alert! Here are three of our most recent purchases: The Book Club by C.J. Cooper, Unconventional Women by Sarah Gilbert & The Good Wife of Bath by Karen Brooks.
The Book Club: The book club was her idea, of course. Alice's. It was her way into our group. A chance to get close. I knew from the day she arrived that she couldn't be trusted. And I was right. Because Alice didn't come to the village for peace and quiet. She came for revenge. - Goodreads
Unconventional Women: In the 1950s and 60s, six young women left their families to join a strictly enclosed order of nuns in Melbourne. Their lives were confined by the convent walls, the rhythms of the Divine Office and the dictates of the Mother Superior. The personal accounts of the six nuns and ex-nuns in Unconventional Women are unusually candid, giving a rare insight into the world of the convent, and exploring their changing relationship with both God and the world. - Goodreads
The Good Wife of Bath: In the middle ages, a famous poet told a story that mocked a strong woman. It became a literary classic. But what if the woman in question had a chance to tell her own version? A provocative, immersive medieval novel starring one of literature's most unforgettable characters in her own words--Chaucer's bold and libidinous Wife of Bath. - Goodreads

We’ve got some new books! Here are two of our most recent purchases: One Hour of Fervor by Muriel Barbery & Three Wild Dogs and the Truth by Markus Zusak.
One Hour of Fervor: From the best-selling author of The Elegance of the Hedgehog comes a story of one man’s promise to keep a secret that will keep him at a remove from the greatest joy in his life. In her poetically precise prose, Muriel Barbery explores beauty and the deep love of a father, but also captures the darkness that pushes people apart. - Goodreads
Three Wild Dogs and the Truth: In this poignant, funny, and disarmingly honest memoir, one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Book Thief, tells of his family’s adoption of three troublesome rescue dogs—a charming and courageous love story about making even the most incorrigible of animals family. - Goodreads
