🚒 Airdrie Fire Department’s Class 4 recruit group is taking on a 57-storey stairclimb in Calgary for a cause tied closely to the fire service.
The recruits will climb 1,370 steps at Brookfield Place on June 14 in support of Wellspring Alberta and firefighter cancer support.
Garret Williams, a probationary firefighter with Airdrie Fire, said the risk firefighters carry does not stop them from answering calls.
“Every time you jump on the truck and go out the doors, it could be the last time you go out those doors,” Williams said.
Deputy Fire Chief Simon Bradley said the fundraiser carries “a much deeper meaning” inside the fire service.
“Firefighters face a significantly higher risk of occupational cancer, so for many of our members this isn’t an abstract cause,” Bradley said.
