We are halfway through our annual Summer Municipal Leaders Caucuses. The sessions focus on property taxes, municipal indicators, water system viability, FCSS, and so much more.

We appreciate everyone who has already joined us last week in the Town Of Vegreville and Town of Coaldale. We are looking forward to connecting with more members at the Summer MLC in The City of Red Deer on June 24.

Municipal growth often comes with a timing and funding gap.

As communities expand, infrastructure and services are needed upfront, but the revenue to support them builds over time. For municipalities, the requirement to balance budgets each year means there’s no flexibility to run a deficit to bridge that gap, adding pressure to how growth is planned and funded.

We need to have a conversation about how Alberta's local community services are funded. ABmunis' Property Taxes Reimagined initiative has been created to help Albertans understand how property taxes are structured.

University of Alberta researchers are seeking municipal input through a confidential survey that explores how leadership is distributed across municipal organizations, how administrative stability affects community resilience, and what conditions support effective governance in Alberta communities.

If you are interested in supporting this research, please complete the survey!

All information will remain confidential and will not be disclosed beyond the partner organizations of Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis), the Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA), and the Mid-size Cities Mayors Caucus (MCMC) and will be used in future reports and academic papers.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities' conference was a busy and productive one for the ABmunis team.

ABmunis President Dylan Bressey GP shared Alberta's municipal success stories during the panel "How to Pay for Growth: Alternatives to Property Taxes and Development Charges," highlighting the impact of Alberta's Off-site Levies Model and our Property Taxes Reimagined initiative.

Dylan also led a dedicated contingent of ABmunis Board members throughout the conference, ensuring Alberta municipalities had a strong voice at key discussions and networking opportunities.

At the Rural Roundtable with Ministers Robertson and Olszewski, infrastructure funding remained a key focus. Dylan emphasized the need for harmonized water and wastewater regulations that allow municipalities to implement safe, effective, and affordable treatment solutions.

We're grateful for the opportunity to connect, collaborate, and advocate on behalf of Alberta municipalities. We look forward to continuing these important conversations and building on the momentum from the conference.

Alberta Municipalities is proud to welcome municipal elected officials from every corner of our great nation and have the opportunity to showcase the beauty, hospitality, and spirit of Alberta.

We look forward to continuing the conversations and connections long after the event wraps up.

Municipal budgets are built on balance but shaped by constraints.

Municipalities are required to match spending with revenue each year, with limited tools to respond to growing demand.

Every dollar has a destination, and every choice has implications for services, infrastructure, and communities. So, next time you receive your property tax bill, take a closer look at how it is allocated and what it reflects.

We need to have a conversation about how Alberta's local community services are funded. ABmunis' Property Taxes Reimagined initiative has been created to help Albertans understand how property taxes are structured.
