Medicine in Ancient Egypt was among the most advanced in the ancient world, blending science, observation, and spirituality.
Medicine was a Sacred profession , many doctors were also priests, especially of gods like Imhotep, who was later worshipped as the god of healing.
Doctors in ancient Egypt were specialized , some treated only the eyes, others the teeth, or internal diseases. This early specialization was rare in ancient times.
Their medical knowledge was recorded in papyri, especially the famous Ebers Papyrus and Edwin Smith Papyrus. These included hundreds of remedies, diagnoses, and surgical procedures.
They performed surgeries (like stitching wounds and setting fractures), used herbal medicines, and even practiced basic dentistry.
Illness was believed to have both physical and spiritual causes. Treatments combined medicine with prayers, spells, and amulets.
Ancient Egyptian medicine was a unique mix of early scientific thinking and religious beliefβand it laid important foundations for later civilizations like Greece and Rome.
