Bar culture is under increasing pressure: bars and clubs are relying ever more heavily on drink sales to fund their cultural programming — yet those very revenues are drying up. 🍸
The result is a slow withdrawal from public life, felt across thousands of venues worldwide. What can be done? Tax relief and targeted cultural funding are an important starting point. But there are individual pathways too: fundraising events, monthly community subscriptions that provide a favourite venue with a reliable baseline income.
Those who drink less alcohol can instead order premium mocktails, buy merchandise, or simply tip more generously. Small gestures that, added together, make a real difference.
DE:
Was lässt sich dagegen tun?

Quitting social media platforms that do not serve all of us equally may sound like a solution, but in a world where there are no realistic alternatives, it feels almost impossible.
That is why the European Union should demand greater transparency around account deletions and moderation decisions, especially when they affect cultural and marginalized communities.
Right now, we are working on a good practice report for the Democracy in Action project, researching the impact of nighttime communities on democracy across Europe. Losing access to platforms has emerged as a major issue in almost every interview we conducted. Digital access is a question of culture, democracy, participation, and freedom of expression.
You can follow account for more expert and latest information on this topic.

When we talk about noise in the streets, we mostly focus only on its disruptive effects. 💥
While disruption is certainly part of it, we should also ask what else it brings to the city. When we remove the sources of noise, we may also be removing something that serves communities in important ways.
That’s why conversations about noise need to remain open and nuanced. Not only about what cities want to reduce, but also about what they want to protect.

24-hour cities are not never-ending chaos, they are actually well-organized. Besides New York, Tokyo, or Berlin, you can also find yourself in a 24-hour city in Prague or Barcelona. They all work a bit differently and have different frameworks, but they show that letting businesses operate around the clock can pay off.
What is your favorite 24h-hour city?
