In October 2008, a group of veterans travellled to Poolewe for a ceremony to hang the Russian Arctic Convoy Bell inside Pool House, their former Command Headquarters. The event was very well attended but one of those who could not come in person was the actress Virginia McKenna. She did, however, send a letter and a photograph showing her portraying a WREN in the film, “The Cruel Sea”.
We were absolutely thrilled yesterday to receive a very large, signed poster to place alongside the photograph and letter. We received this through the kind auspices of television auctioneer James Lewis who is a close friend of Virginia and who requested she send a poster to add to our collection. We are absolutely delighted and hugely grateful to both of them.

We are commemorating VE Day today with some Homity Pie! This WWII recipe can often be found on our cafe menu and is as popular now as it was during wartime.
