430 children and adults have started swimming lessons at Active Wirral leisure centres in the last year, building their confidence and teaching them a vital life skill.

This Drowning Prevention Week, the Swim Wirral team has been helping more children improve their water safety skills before the summer holidays. Formal lessons reduce drowning risks by up to 88% in young children and help pupils reach the school goal of swimming 25 metres unaided. 🏅

So if you're looking for lessons, the Swim Wirral team will teach your child to swim using the established Swim England pathway.

👶 Aqua Tots / Ducklings (0 to 4 yrs): Fun water confidence with a parent. An extra Saturday morning Aqua Tots session has just been added at Leasowe Leisure Centre!

👧 Stages 1–7 (Ages 5+ to 16): Independent swimming and stroke mastery across the borough.

👤 Adults (18+): Build confidence or fine-tune your technique.

Book lessons from the Active Wirral website or contact the team for a chat at [email protected] or 0151 606 2010.

Big ideas for cleaner air are starting in our classrooms. 🌍💡

Eight primary schools across Wirral have been raising awareness about air pollution as we mark Clean Air Day 2026, taking part in the Cool Climate Challenge

From creative campaigns to hands-on projects, pupils explored ways to help families better understand air quality and the difference small changes can make.

Heswall Primary School took first place with their focus on idling car engines. 🚗

Their project highlights the pollution caused by leaving engines running outside schools, using home packs, real-life data from air quality monitors, and pupil-led videos to show the impact of switching off.

Every school that took part will now receive £250 funding to bring their ideas to life over the next year, before sharing their results at Clean Air Day 2027. 🌱

Families are starting to see real improvements in SEND support in Wirral
A report going to Wirral’s Children, Young People and Education Committee on 17 June shows families are starting to see improvements in support for children and young people with additional needs.

Key progress highlighted includes:
✅ clearer communication and easier contact with named caseworkers
✅ quicker decisions, with most EHCP assessments decided within six weeks
✅ more consistent support for families
✅ smoother transitions, with all key phase transfers completed on time for the first time in over a decade

Families report better information, improved coordination and a more joined-up approach across services.

While there’s lots to celebrate, improvements are still needed to manage demand, increase access to specialist placements and continue strengthening consistency across the system.

The overall direction is positive, with a continued focus on improving outcomes for children, young people and families.

Could you be a Shared Lives carer? If you’ve ever thought about making a real difference in someone’s life – this could be for you.
We’ve answered some of the most common questions to help you get a feel for what it’s all about 👇

What is Shared Lives?
It’s a unique kind of care where you welcome someone into your home and support them as part of your day-to-day family life.

Who can become a carer?
People from all walks of life! If you’re caring, open-minded and have a spare room, you could be a great fit.

Do I need experience?
No previous experience is needed – just the right values. You’ll get full training and ongoing support.

What does the role involve?
You might help someone with everyday things like cooking, getting out and about, or building confidence and independence.

Will I be supported?
Absolutely. You’ll have a dedicated team behind you, with regular check-ins, guidance when you need it, and respite support available too, so you can take breaks when needed.

Is it flexible?
Yes – you can support someone long-term, offer short breaks, or provide day support depending on what works for you.

Is it paid?
Yes – Shared Lives carers are paid for the support they provide. Payments depend on the type of support. For example, long-term carers currently receive around £600+ per week per person, while day support starts from £40.35 per half day.

More affordable homes, better housing conditions and support with the cost of living are at the heart of Wirral’s new Housing Strategy Implementation Plan. 🏡🔧

The plan sets out how we’ll tackle some of the biggest housing challenges facing our borough - from improving standards and addressing issues like damp and cold homes, to helping residents lower their energy bills and preventing homelessness.

It also outlines how we’ll work with partners through our new Strategic Housing Partnership to deliver more affordable, high-quality homes and attract investment into Wirral. Alongside this, there’s a strong focus on making services easier to access, with a more joined-up approach so residents only need to tell their story once, and making more support available through community hubs and early help.

If approved, the plan will guide how we deliver housing over the coming years - creating sustainable neighbourhoods and supporting residents at every stage of their housing journey.

Councillors will consider the plan on 16 June at the Economy, Regeneration and Housing Committee.

Projects devised by local community groups are set to benefit from a successful council-led bid to the National Lottery Climate Action Fund. 💚

If agreed by committee next week, the £1.57 million funding would back the Cool Wirral Thriving Communities programme over the next three years. It’s been shaped with residents and local partners, focusing on healthier lives, stronger connections and practical help to cut food and energy bills while lowering carbon footprints. 🌍

What this could mean for Wirral:

• Support for 14,000 residents directly, with 43,500 more reached through families and community networks. 👥
• Improved mental wellbeing for 3,500 people. 🙂
• Lower food costs for 570 households, plus reduced energy bills for 620 households and 72 community organisations. ⚡🥕

Led by the council and delivered with local partners, the programme would bring together support around food, energy, travel and wellbeing in one place, making it easier to get the help that fits everyday life.

More detail is available on the Wirral View website.
