NRA Signs Two Contracts to Improve Road Conditions in North Bank Region
As part of its mandate to develop and maintain road infrastructure across the country, the National Roads Authority (NRA) on Tuesday, 2nd June 2026, signed two road maintenance contracts with Smateq Construction and Pinnacle Group JV Heritage Holdings to improve deteriorating road conditions in Kuntaya and Banni Village in the North Bank Region (NBR).
The intervention follows unexpected structural challenges in the affected areas, which have caused significant difficulties for residents and commuters travelling through the communities.
Under these contracts, Pinnacle Group JV Heritage Holdings will undertake the construction of the Kuntaya Triple Cell Culverts, while Smateq Construction will work on the Five Cell Culverts project in Banni Village.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, Managing Director of the National Roads Authority (NRA), congratulated both companies on securing the contracts, noting that their selection was based on merit and their proven track records in previous projects.
“This project is a testament to the important service you provide to the communities because the work being entrusted to you is critical,” he told the contractors.
Mr Janneh emphasised the importance of the projects, stating that road accessibility remains essential to the daily lives and livelihoods of communities.
“Sometimes people underestimate the importance of such projects without realising the impact they have on the lives of ordinary people. These maintenance are vital for people travelling to work, schools, markets and health facilities,” he said.
He further highlighted that heavy stormwater flows have, at times, rendered the affected areas virtually inaccessible, leaving residents stranded and disrupting economic and social activities.
The NRA Managing Director urged the contractors to maintain the level of professionalism and commitment they demonstrated during the selection process and ensure the timely and effective ex*****on of the projects.
He reaffirmed the NRA’s commitment to improving road connectivity and ensuring safer and more reliable transport infrastructure for communities across the country.

NRA MD Says Road Infrastructure Key to National Development as Barrow Launches 85km URR Project
The Managing Director of the National Roads Authority (NRA), Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, has described road infrastructure as a fundamental pillar for national development, saying improved road networks create opportunities and drive socio-economic growth.
Mr. Janneh made the remarks during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for an 85.3-kilometre road project across the Jimara, Tumana and Kantora districts in the Upper River Region (URR), presided over by Adama Barrow.
The ceremony forms part of the government’s nationwide road construction programme aimed at improving rural connectivity and increasing access to essential services and economic opportunities for communities.
The roads, fully funded by the government, fall under Lots 5 and 6 of the Connect Gambia Infrastructure Projects initiative.
The 85.3-kilometre network comprises four road sections: Mankamang K***a–Julangel–Sare Musa–Sare Wollom–Banatenda (11.2km) under Lot 5; Girouba–Sabusireh–Touba Tafsir–Dasilame–Alumhari Abdou–Banico Keh Koro–Kumbita–Samba Tako–Kabakama (23.2km) under Lot 6; Suduwol–Missiraba Mariama–Nyamanari (24km) under Lot 6; and Tinkinjo–Sanunbing–Dingirin–Madina Samako–Diabugu Ba Sillah (26.9km), also under Lot 6.
“For communities whose livelihoods depend on farming, trade, education and health services, access determines opportunity,” Mr. Janneh stated.
He noted that the roads go beyond physical construction, describing them as catalysts for productivity, social inclusion and economic resilience.
Speaking on the technical scope of the projects, the NRA boss explained that all roads under the programme would be built to all-weather standards.
“The works commenced with accurate surveying and setting-out to ensure proper alignment, level and gradient. Thereafter, earthworks will shape a stable road formation with the appropriate camber to safely drain surface water away from the carriageway,” he explained.
The project is expected to significantly improve transportation, stimulate economic activity and enhance the livelihoods of beneficiary communities throughout the region.
Representatives of beneficiary communities expressed appreciation to President Barrow for the initiative and pledged their continued support to his administration.
