The vet comes to the Shark Lab!
With no resident veterinarian on the island, the team from Caves Village Veterinary Hospital on Grand Bahama came to Bimini to assess the health of our local animals! The team spent a day at the Shark Lab performing check ups for the animals of South Bimini before heading to North Bimini to spay, neuter, and check up on the animals over there.
In the lead-up to the clinic, our staff and interns team up with Island Paws Rescue to advertise the clinic and locate stray cats and dogs. During the clinic, our crew helped with organizing visitors, assisted with check ups and supported the visiting vets and animals however we could!

Blacktips from above!
These blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) were seen swimming near a school of bonefish (Albula vulpes) over one of Bimini’s sand flats. Both blacktips and bonefish are common sights around the Bimini islands, and can sometimes be seen together when the sharks are looking for stragglers in the school they can make into a quick meal.

Guardians of the reef!
This Caribbean reef shark (Carcharhinus perezi) had the spotlight stolen by a trigger fish in classic trigger fish style! Both of these species are familiar faces across coral reef habitats here in Bimini. As top reef predators, Caribbean reef sharks play an important role in regulating marine ecosystems by predating on fish and maintaining the balance of the reef.
How many Caribbean reef sharks can you spot in this video?

Showing off all her angles!
Ever wonder why Great hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna mokarran) move their head from side to side while swimming? Due to the wide spacing of their eyes, Great hammerheads have nearly 360 degree vision, however, they have a blind spot right in the centre of their head. By moving their head back and forth they can eliminate this blind spot and search for food at the same time!

Boots, bands and big shark energy!
Our crew had such an amazing and successful time at Tortuga Country Music and Conservation Festival this year!
We were set up in the conservation village for 3 days where we chatted to over 300 people about sharks, the work we do at the lab, our work in the Florida Keys, and gave out more stamps than ever! Noodle, our Nurse shark also had such a fun time dancing to the pop-up bands! Thank you to everyone who visited our booth! It was great to meet so many shark enthusiasts and we look forward to returning next year!
