Creation of Office of Tax Ombud to promote taxpayers' right is one of the hallmarks of the tax reforms - Adesokan
The Executive Secretary of the Joint Revenue Board, Mr. Olusegun Adesokan, has said that the creation of the Office of the Tax Ombud, which is saddled with the promotion of taxpayers' rights, remains one of the hallmarks of the Nigerian tax reforms.
Mr. Adesokan said vulnerable and less-privileged taxpayers who may not be able to afford the cost of litigation, now have an independent platform where they can ventilate their grievances and press for their rights.
The Executive Secretary of the Board made the assertion at the unveiling of the official website, launching of the toll-free centre and case management system by the Office of the Tax Ombud, in Abuja, on Monday 18 May 2026.
He thanked President Bola Tinubu for creating the Office of the Tax Ombud, which he noted will strengthen taxpayers' confidence and trust, and ensure fairness, transparency and accountability in revenue administration.
Mr. Adesokan lauded the Tax Ombud, Dr. John Nwabueze, for opening channels of communication where aggrieved and dissatisfied taxpayers can reach out to seek help and redress.
The event was attended by the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, his Information and National Orientation counterpart, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the Head of Service, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, Special Adviser (Economic Matters) to the President, Dr. Tope Fasua, among other key stakeholders in the sector.
The Office of the Tax Ombud is established by the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act 2025 as an independent and impartial arbiter to review and resolve complaints relating to tax, and serve as a watch-dog against arbitrary fiscal policy.
Dissatisfied taxpayers who may need information to file complaints can visit the website, www.taxombud.gov.ng, call the toll-free number 08000089632 or email [email protected]

*Harmonisation of Taxes and Levies Law will help improve revenue administration at Local Government Level - Adesokan*
The Executive Secretary of the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), Mr. Olusegun Adesokan, has said that the Harmonised Taxes and Levies Law being domesticated by States will equally help to improve revenue administration at the Local Government level.
Mr. Adesokan who stated this at the 28th National Tax Conference organised by the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) in Abuja, said revenue collected, remitted and accounted for, by Local Government Councils in Nigeria remains very low.
He said the 2025 internally generated revenue figures from Local Government Areas in 19 States so far collated by the JRB was about N45 billion, noting that some of the revenue collected in cash by local government revenue agents may have been lost to leakages.
The Executive Secretary of the JRB who was a discussant on the sub-theme, "Sub-national Fiscal Governance and Revenue Autonomy: Strengthening State and Local Revenue Systems Under the JRB Act 2025", stated that the Harmonised Taxes and Levies Law currently being domesticated in States across the country, will enhance efficiency in revenue administration at the State and Local Government levels.
The Harmonised Taxes and Levies Law which has so far been domesticated by 15 States, outlaws and criminalises cash collection and the mounting of roadblocks for the collection of taxes, levies and other statutory charges.
Under the model Law, revenue officers and accredited tax agents are the only persons allowed to give tax assessments and collect revenue. The model Law also provides for Local Governments to choose to delegate the power of assessment and collection of their taxes to States, where there is a need, to make collection simpler, seamless and efficient.
Mr. Adesokan noted that the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act 2025, which was an offshoot of the tax reforms, expanded the mandate of the Board to include promoting harmonisation of taxes, levies, rates, charges and other payments and ensure uniformity in revenue administration across the three tiers of government in Nigeria.
