World Menstrual Hygiene Day: Towards a Period-Friendly World🩸🌎

What does a period friendly world mean⁉️

According to Google, it is 'a society where menstruation is accepted as a normal, natural part of life, free from stigma, shame, or gender-based limitations'.

So how do we create a period-friendly world❓️

👉It starts with providing the right information about menstrual hygiene, so girls and women can ask informed questions and make the best choices for their health and well-being.

👉It means allowing young boys into spaces where menstrual health conversations happen, so they grow up understanding and supporting menstrual health instead of stigmatizing it.

👉It means teaching girls that periods are natural and nothing to be ashamed of.

👉It means turning awareness into action:

📌 Providing pad banks in schools
📌 Supporting menstrual leave policies for women with severe period conditions in workplaces
📌 Saying NO to period shaming
📌 Creating safe spaces for open and honest conversations about menstruation

Together, we can create a world where menstruation is treated with dignity, understanding, and care.

SPMC’s 7 Ways of Creating a Period-Friendly World 🌍🩸

At SPMC, we are committed to normalising period conversations, alleviating period poverty, and creating a world where every girl and woman can menstruate with dignity.

Here are our 7 ways of making impact:

1️⃣ One-Year Pad Scholarship Programme
Through this initiative, we provide school girls with menstrual kits containing essential hygiene items and reusable sanitary pads that last for at least one year. So far, we have supported over 5,000 girls including girls with disabilities across 13 states in Nigeria.

2️⃣ Advocacy Through Petitions on Change.org
We launched two petitions on advocating for:
• Free sanitary pads for secondary school girls in Nigeria
• Free sanitary pads for differently-abled girls in Nigeria
Our goal is to push for policies that make menstrual products accessible to every girl.

3️⃣ My Period Stories Podcast
Through our audio and TV podcasts, women and men from around the world share their personal period stories. We spotlight important conversations around menstrual health, stigma, and education.

4️⃣ My Period My Pride Radio Drama
This radio drama advocacy through entertainment raises awareness about the dangers of period poverty, teenage pregnancy, and the silent struggles faced by girls and women from low-income communities.

5️⃣ My Period Stories Essay Competition
We encourage girls to boldly own and share their stories instead of hiding behind silence, shame, and stigma. We proudly celebrated winners from Anambra, Lagos, and Akwa Ibom States.

6️⃣ Menstrual-Themed Sip-and-Paint Event 🎨
By combining creativity and advocacy, we create safe spaces where girls can freely paint, learn, and openly discuss periods while challenging common myths and misconceptions.

7️⃣ Your Menstrual Health in 5 Minutes 📻
Through radio conversations, we address unspoken menstrual health challenges, encourage girls and women to ask questions, and connect them with the support they need in good time.

Together, we are building a future where menstruation is met with dignity, education, support, and pride not shame.

Please Cover Me😢😞

Many girls in schools still go through this
Why?
You ask why?
Period poverty of course!

Some families struggle to eat twice in a day
And other bills pile up
Pray, tell me
Why would such a family prioritise sanitary products?
So this gets pushed to the bottom of the list
Or it doesn't make it to the list

So the girls make do with unsanitary items
Many don't understand
The far reaching consequences of these items

We can make life better for our young girls
Provide them with pads
Step into a school and give them a pad bank
Your organisation can build toilets 🚻 and provide water

Everything doesn't have to be done by the government
Play your part today.

Join us as we keep girls in school by providing them with items for menstrual hygiene with our One Year Pad Scholarship Programme.

Girls, my girls

Be proud of who you
You see that flow,
It is a blessing
Not a curse,
No!
Never a curse 🤬

Girls, my girls
This flow you complain about,
It comes with cramps
And mood swings
Fatigue and all
That's normal
And it will be over in a few days

Girls, my girls
There might be stains from time to time
No need to be ashamed
No need to internalise the shame
Even the older ones get stained
It happens, so no need to be downcast.

Girls, my girls
Eating healthy is important
Living healthy is important
This comes intentionally
Not randomly
Think about your body

Girls, my girls
Periods aren't a hindrance
Periods aren't a barrier
You can be great with your period
You can live the life of your dreams with your period
Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Now clock 👌it coz that's on period.
