Since 2006, Benue SEMA has existed for one reason, to protect every life in Benue State.
Established nearly two decades ago as the state's lead institution for emergency management and disaster response, Benue SEMA was built to be the agency that shows up when everything else is falling apart.
Under the leadership of Sir-James Aondoakaa Iorpuu, PhD, Benue SEMA has grown into one of Nigeria's most active sub-national emergency management institutions.
Today the agency manages 15 active IDP camps across Makurdi, Guma, Logo, and Gwer-West LGAs, serving over 60,000 displaced persons. Monthly distributions of food and non-food items reach IDPs, Cameroonian refugees, and persons with special needs, without fail. Early warning campaigns are being taken directly into flood-prone communities.
And partnerships with UNHCR Nigeria, NEMA, IOM, UNICEF, and the Nigerian Red Cross continue to deepen.
But beyond the operations, what Sir James has built is a culture. One that says no displaced person is invisible. No community warning goes undelivered. No family in this state faces a crisis alone.
Nearly 20 years in. The mandate has not changed. Neither has the commitment.

MAJOR INTERNAL SHAKE-UP AT BENUE-SEMA
A bold move has just been made to redefine discipline and operational standards within the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BENUE-SEMA).
The Executive Secretary, Sir-James Aondoakaa Iorpuu PhD, has officially rolled out newly kitted uniforms for all internal security personnel, signaling a zero-tolerance stance on laxity, indiscipline, and off-post roaming during duty hours.
This decisive action underscores a broader institutional shift:
from routine oversight to strict accountability⦠from presence to performance.

Happy Children's Day Celebration to every child in Benue State ππ
Today is yours. Play. Laugh. Be loud. Dream without limits. You are the most important thing about the future of this state and do not let anyone tell you otherwise.
To the children in our schools, our homes, our communities, and our IDP camps, your joy matters. Your safety matters. Your future matters.
Every single thing Benue SEMA does, every camp we run, every early warning we issue, every family we support, is ultimately for you. Because a state that protects its children is a state that is serious about its future.
Enjoy your day to the fullest. You deserve it.

Benue SEMA and NEMA Took the Flood Warning Directly to the Community.
Benue SEMA and NEMA walked into Bambam community in Makurdi, right behind Modern Market, and sat with residents at the home of their community leader, Zaki Alfred Ankon. No press conference. No podium. Just a direct, honest conversation about what is coming and what every household needs to do right now.
Clear your drainage channels. Stop dumping refuse in waterways. Do not build or settle in flood-prone areas. And the moment water levels start rising in your community, call Benue SEMA immediately.
The community leader didn't just listen. He spoke. He called on the Benue State Government to open blocked access roads and extend the drainage canal from the Idye Basin to the Bambam Basin, a challenge that has worsened flooding in the area for years.
Safety materials were distributed. Both sides left with something to act on.
This is what early warning looks like when it is done right.

In Benue State, flooding is not a question of if. It is a question of when and how ready you are.
That is not an alarm. That is geography.
The state sits along the Benue River, one of Nigeria's largest river systems, and every rainy season brings with it the real possibility of rising water levels, overflowing banks, and displaced communities.
The Benue State Government has not ignored this reality. Drainage systems have been built and rehabilitated. Communities living near riverbanks have been warned and sensitised. Radio jingles are running daily. The government is investing in the infrastructure that reduces the impact of what nature sends.
But infrastructure protects communities. Preparation protects families. And that part is yours.
When was the last time you sat down with your household and talked about what to do if the water rises? Where you would go. What you would take. Who you would call.
That conversation could be the most important one you have this month.
Start it today. And save this number while you are at it.
