Following the close of entries for the National Essay Competition on Emergency Management Awareness on April 15, I am pleased to provide an update on the progress made so far in the processing and assessment of submissions, in fulfilment of our commitment to transparency and regular communication with participants and the general public.

I am delighted to report that the competition has continued to demonstrate strong national impact. While we initially recorded close to 4,000 entries at the point of submission, the ongoing verification and screening process has now established a total of 1,757 entries across all categories, following the removal of duplicates, incomplete submissions, and other irregular entries.

Out of this number, 1,089 entries have been confirmed as valid and have progressed to the assessment stage, reflecting a solid and competitive pool of submissions drawn from across the country . The remaining entries were either disqualified for non-compliance with submission guidelines or received after the official deadline, in line with the rules governing the competition.

The distribution of entries across categories further underscores the reach of this initiative. The tertiary institution category recorded the highest level of participation, followed by the secondary school category and the NYSC Emergency Management Vanguards category. This trend reflects strong engagement among young Nigerians, particularly at the undergraduate level, and affirms the relevance of the themes explored in this competition.

I am also encouraged by the depth of interest reflected in the submission patterns. A significant proportion of entries were received in the final days leading up to the deadline, demonstrating sustained engagement and enthusiasm among participants nationwide.

Let me assure all participants that the assessment process is progressing steadily under the guidance of the esteemed panel constituted for this purpose. The panel, comprising experts in disaster risk management and development communications, is applying a rigorous, transparent, and merit-based evaluation framework to ensure that every valid entry receives due consideration.

We remain fully committed to the integrity of this process. Every qualifying submission is being carefully reviewed, and all outcomes will be properly documented and accounted for. In keeping with our promise, we will continue to provide regular updates as the assessment progresses, leading to the announcement of winners in due course.

Beyond the numbers, what is most important is the message this competition has reinforced—that awareness is growing, that young Nigerians are thinking critically about disaster risks, and that preparedness is increasingly becoming a shared national value.

We thank all participants once again for their enthusiasm and contributions, and we look forward to the next stage of this important national engagement.

Thank you.

Announcing NEMA 2026 National Essay Competition

Today, the National Emergency Management Agency is pleased to launch a National Essay Competition designed to engage young Nigerians in an issue that affects every community—disaster preparedness, emergency response, and national resilience.

Across our country, floods, fires, building collapses, and other emergencies remind us that disasters do not give notice. Experience has taught us that preparedness saves lives, and awareness is the foundation of preparedness. This competition is therefore not just about writing essays; it is about shaping how young Nigerians think about risk, responsibility, and collective action.

The competition is open to secondary school students, students of tertiary institutions, and our National Youth Service Corps – Emergency Management Vanguards (NYSC-EMVs) across Nigeria.

For secondary school students, the topic is “My Role in Disaster Risk Reduction,” and it is intended to help young students reflect on their personal responsibility, the importance of preparation, and the power of community action during emergencies.

For tertiary institution students, the topic is, “Climate Change and Disaster Management in Nigeria,” and for the NYSC-EMVs, the topic to be explored is, “Technology for Disaster Response: Opportunities and Challenges.” These areas invite deeper analysis of policy, innovation, and long-term strategies for managing disaster risks in a changing world.

Essays for secondary school students should not exceed 500 words, while entries from tertiary students and the NYSC-EMVs should not be more than 1000 words. Submissions will be assessed on relevance, originality, and clarity by experts drawn from institutions specialising in disaster risk management and development communications experts.

Outstanding contributions will be rewarded. The best essay in each category will receive ₦500,000 and a trophy, while the first runner-up will receive ₦300,000 each and the second runner-up will receive N200, 000 each. The top ten entries in each category will also receive certificates and recognition.

The competition opens today, April 1, and closes on April 15, with winners to be announced subsequently.

This initiative reflects our belief that emergency management is a shared responsibility. When young people are informed and engaged, communities become safer and more resilient.

I therefore encourage students across Nigeria to participate actively, schools and institutions to support them, and the media to help amplify this important national conversation.

Together, we can build a safer, more prepared, and more resilient Nigeria.
