On Saturday evening, June 13, at approximately 8:05 p.m., the Alpharetta Police Department received a 911 call from a distressed father who had become separated from his two young sons while riding bicycles on the Alpharetta Greenway near Rock Mill Park.

As officers were dispatched, multiple D Squad officers responded to the Greenway from different access points, working in both directions to locate the children as quickly as possible.

With daylight fading and visibility becoming more limited along portions of the Greenway, officers understood the importance of finding the boys before dark.

During the search, the father told officers that one of his sons was wearing a smartwatch. Working together, officers and personnel in the Emergency Communications Center were able to use the device to make contact with the children and obtain an approximate location.

Using that information, officers quickly narrowed the search area and safely located both boys.

In all, the children were found and reunited with their father about 11 minutes after the first officer arrived on scene.

We are grateful for the quick actions of our officers, the support of our 911 Communications Center, and the role technology played in helping bring this situation to a safe and happy ending. Incidents like this are a reminder of how valuable connected devices can be during an emergency, especially when time matters most.

Thank you to Nordstrom Rack for their generosity and support of the Alpharetta Police Department!

Our officers were treated to an incredible act of kindness from the Nordstrom Rack team. The hospitality was so appreciated that Lieutenant Carter even held the department's 5:00 p.m. shift briefing at the store so officers coming on duty could enjoy the opportunity as well.

Community partnerships like these remind us that public safety is truly a shared effort. The support and encouragement shown to our officers today meant more than you know and serves as a powerful example of what makes the Alpharetta community so special.

On behalf of the men and women of the Alpharetta Police Department, thank you for your kindness, generosity, and continued support of local law enforcement.

Have you noticed traffic in the area of Mid Broadwell has gotten pretty bad? Culverts along the road and portions of the sidewalks are being replaced as the city looks to improve the conditions along the road. With all of this work, traffic will be heavily impacted by road closures on Mid Broadwell between Wills Rd and Bethany Rd. If you’re traveling through the area, consider taking Rucker Rd or Mayfield Rd.

Construction is expected to run through July 26.

Alright, Alpharetta, as we head into Memorial Day weekend, a quick but important reminder for parents and riders about the safe and lawful operation of electric bikes and electric motorcycles throughout our community.

Electric motorcycles that do not meet Georgia roadway requirements are not legal for operation on public roads, streets, or sidewalks in Alpharetta. If a vehicle functions as a motorcycle, it is regulated as a motorcycle under state law, including licensing, registration, and equipment requirements. Many of the vehicles currently being operated locally do not meet these legal standards.

Law enforcement agencies across Georgia continue to report concerns involving unsafe operation of high-speed electric vehicles by young riders, including excessive speeds, failure to obey traffic laws, and dangerous riding behaviors that place riders and the public at risk.

Rules to remember in Georgia:
• Electric motorcycles and similar motorized vehicles are not permitted on sidewalks or roadways
• Riders operating legally classified e-bikes on roadways must ride as far to the right as safely practicable
• Class 3 e-bikes, capable of speeds up to 28 mph, require riders to be at least 15 years old
• Vehicles exceeding legal e-bike classifications may require registration, licensing, and additional safety compliance under Georgia law

The City’s concern is centered on safety. Many riders, particularly younger operators, may not fully understand the capabilities, legal classifications, or risks associated with these vehicles.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to carefully evaluate any electric vehicle before purchase to ensure it is lawful, appropriate, and safely operated within the community, helping keep Alpharetta’s streets safe, responsible, and welcoming for everyone.
