Juneteenth was designated as a federal holiday in 2021, but it has been celebrated for over a century in communities across the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln, enslaved people in Texas did not receive word until June 19, 1865 that more than 250,000 in the state were free by executive decree. Juneteenth derives its name from combining “June” and “nineteenth.”

City of Covington offices are closed today, Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth.
