There’s few joys like the joy of being a father. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there from the first time dad to the one’s who’ve raised their kids. Enjoy it. It goes by so fast.

What are we hiring for?
Are we hiring for certifications? Degrees? “Experience”? Demographics?

What makes the perfect firefighter?

Heart.

And Balls.

Before you get it twisted, this isn’t literal. It’s figurative. Balls. Stones. Cojones. Boldness and courage.

This job requires a lot. We talk about folks that have been hired that are not physically fit or folks that never seem to “get it”, whether that is they never grasp the true importance of this job OR they never competently grasp the skills and choose to be mediocre at best and sub par at worst.

This is where hiring for “heart” comes in. If we hire for heart, we hire people that realize the seriousness of the job. They realize the seriousness of staying in shape and performing on the fire ground. They realize they struggle with that ladder throw or that victim drag or forcing that door and they come into shift and rep out the skill over and over looking to improve.

Heart matters. It’s how you keep low performers out.

Then the balls. This job takes boldness and courage. The willingness to do things many ordinary people wouldn’t. The willingness to put yourself in situations where you might get injured.

Heart.
