🚒🏃‍♂️ As a best practice, turnout gear should be used for the incidents it was designed for—not for workouts, stair climbs, or fitness training.

🔥 Turnouts are exposed to products of combustion, diesel exhaust, soot, heavy metals, and other hazardous contaminants throughout their service life.

🧼 Even when cleaned properly, contaminants and carcinogens may still remain on the gear.

⚠️ PFAS (“forever chemicals”), historically used in some firefighter PPE components and moisture barriers, have been associated with adverse health effects and are an ongoing area of concern within the fire service.

💪 Want the challenge? Use PT gear, a weighted vest, or other approved fitness equipment instead.

✅ Train hard.
✅ Train smart.
✅ Reduce unnecessary exposures.

Use your PPE for the incidents that require it per your department’s SOPs/SOGs.

Your health today helps protect your future tomorrow.

Every day, firefighters risk their lives by exposing themselves to toxic chemicals, call after call. Certain areas of the body absorb carcinogens more easily, putting firefighters at higher risk of cancer. AB 1383, CPF's highest priority bill, helps confront these risks head-on. That’s why your support matters. Stand with us in Sacramento this June to show your support when it matters most. Visit cpfactivism.org to see how you can get involved.

Please read and support

"For many firefighters, cancer isn’t a question of if — it’s when. Every additional year on the job means more cumulative exposures, and their impacts are well-documented." - Sacramento Area Firefighters Local 522 Firefighter Jeremy Gardella

The risks firefighters face are real, which is why supporting is so important. This critical legislation helps address occupational cancer risks by strengthening protections for those who put their health on the line to protect our communities.
