The LGBTQ+ rights movement was shaped by countless leaders, activists, and changemakers. This Pride Month, we’re highlighting five trailblazers whose work helped move equality forward and continues to inspire generations today.

🏳️‍🌈 Marsha P. Johnson
Helped ignite the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement and became a fierce advocate for transgender people and LGBTQ+ youth.

🏳️‍⚧️ Sylvia Rivera
Changed the conversation around LGBTQ+ equality by demanding that transgender voices be heard and included.

🏛️ Harvey Milk
Inspired generations of LGBTQ+ people to live openly and pursue leadership in public life.

📚 Audre Lorde
Used her voice to challenge injustice and redefine how we talk about identity, equality, and belonging.

✊ Bayard Rustin
Helped shape one of the most influential civil rights movements in American history and paved the way for future generations of activists.

As we celebrate Pride, we also honor those whose courage, advocacy, and leadership helped make progress possible.

Want to spend part of Pride weekend with us?

We’re looking for volunteers to help at the HRC Columbus booth during Columbus Pride on June 19-20. You’ll chat with attendees, answer questions, share information about HRC, and help with merchandise sales. We’ll make sure you’re trained and ready to go.

We’re especially looking for help with the Saturday 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. shifts.

Community Home Community Hub is an online platform for HRC volunteers to find ways to get involved in their community, receive necessary training, and connect with other individuals giving their time to the fight for LGBTQ equality.
