Flag Day is celebrated in the United States every year on June 14th and honors the adoption of the American flag. Here are some fun and interesting facts about it:
🇺🇸 What Flag Day is all about
* Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes on June 14, 1777 by the Second Continental Congress.
* The resolution stated that the flag should have 13 stripes and 13 stars, representing the original colonies.
🪡 Betsy Ross connection (the famous story)
* Many people associate the first American flag with Betsy Ross, a Philadelphia seamstress.
* While it’s a beloved story, historians debate whether she actually designed the first flag—there’s no solid historical proof.
📅 It became official… sort of late
* Flag Day wasn’t made a national holiday by law.
* In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day.
* In 1949, Congress established it as a national observance, but not a federal holiday.
🎉 It’s celebrated in different ways
* Schools and communities often hold parades, flag-raising ceremonies, and patriotic events.
* Some towns in Pennsylvania (like Waubeka, Wisconsin—one of the “birthplaces” of Flag Day) host large celebrations.
⭐ The flag keeps evolving
* The U.S. flag has changed 27 times as states were added.
* The current 50-star flag has been in use since July 4, 1960, after Hawaii became a state.
🧠 A quirky fact
* There is actually a difference between:
* Flag Day (June 14)
* Independence Day (July 4)
* National Flag Week, which is the full week surrounding Flag Day
