Monday afternoon College Mound firefighters were called to assist the City of Terrell Fire Department with a house fire. The fire proved tough to extinguish and afternoon heat led to medical emergencies on the fireground.
At 4:32 pm Terrell 911 received a call of a house on fire at 708 N Frances St. The City of Terrell Fire Department as well as the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched. First arriving crews found heavy fire and smoke showing from the rear of a 1 story home. Additional resources were requested from Forney Fire Department.
Fire had traveled into the attic of the home and was rapidly spreading. Firefighters mounted an aggressive interior attack but were push out by heavy fire conditions. Firefighters continued to battle the blaze from the exterior of the home.
One firefighter outside the structure fell ill due to high temperature. Careflite medics transported the firefighter to a local hospital for care. He's reported to be recovering. A short while later a second firefighter suffered heat related issues. He was treated on scene and went back to work.
The fire proved to be very difficult to battle especially with the hot conditions. Additional assistance was requested from College Mound, Elmo and Kaufman fire departments. Three hours later firefighters were still on scene overhauling and knocking out hot spots.
Firefighters were notified of the fire by a group of teens. After calling 911 they forced entry into the home and assisted an elderly woman and her dog to safety. Neither were injured.
The woman shares the home with her adult son but was alone when the fire broke out. The Red Cross is providing assistance to the displaced residents. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
