On this day in 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation, "all slaves are free". Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, freedom, resilience, and was signed into law as a federal holiday in 2021.
