"We Have our Ticket, and What a Ticket it is!"
From the Polk County Democrats weekly newsletter, written by Chair Bill Brauch.
Polk County Democrats turned out in big numbers for last Tuesday’s primary election! Statewide, the story was the same. Democrats, and our like-minded non-party and Republican friends, are ready for leadership change at every level of Iowa government, and change is what our candidates offer!
Our Congressional ticket in the Third District is top-notch! In the Senate, Iowa has been in the wilderness since Tom Harkin retired in 2014. Now, in Josh Turek, we have a candidate directly in Harkin’s mold, a candidate who focuses like a laser on the interests of working folks. In Sarah Trone Garriott, we have a House candidate who, unlike the incumbent, actually likes Iowans and isn’t afraid to meet with them. Sarah has spent her career in public service, and in the ministry, pursuing social justice and working for the betterment of all.
Tom Harkin was a leader in the mold of great public servants such as Hubert Humphrey. Tom likes to quote Humphrey’s statement about the moral test of government: “The moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in shadows of life, the sick, the needy, and the handicapped.”
I think the late Vice President’s statement captures perfectly the values that Josh and Sarah will bring to Congress, and Polk Dems are chomping at the bit to get out there and help them win!
In Rob Sand we have our strongest candidate for Governor in many years, and his addition of Dave Muhlbauer to the team as our candidate for Lt. Governor comprises a compelling ticket! In two outstanding terms as State Auditor, Rob has proven that he puts the interests of Iowans first. He truly will be a governor for all. His conduct in office and the emphasis of his campaign cement that. Unlike his extremist opponent, (a man who should have run for Governor of Kansas, his true home!), Rob will listen to everyone. Rob will seek collaboration and compromise, where possible. His opponent would bring more of the same autocratic, divisive, culture war leadership of Governor Kim Reynolds. Iowans are ready for a change in the Governor’s office, and Rob will be an incredible change for the better!
Our other state-wide candidates are also outstanding. Nate Willems will be a great Attorney General, in the mold of Tom Miller – a peoples’ Attorney General, not an AG like Brenna Bird, whose one client appears to be Donald Trump and not the people of Iowa. John Norwood will be a great Treasurer. Ryan Peterman will be a super Secretary of State. Taylor Wettach will be an Auditor in Rob Sand’s mold, and Chris Jones will be the best Secretary of Agriculture in the country and not a captive of Big Agriculture.
Across the state, Democratic Party state House and Senate candidates routinely drew more voters than their Republican counterparts, many of whom were incumbents. We’re definitely going to make good progress in electing more Democrats to the legislature in November.
Locally, the county supervisor primaries will send three new faces to the Polk County Board in Izaah JB Knox, Heather Jones-Brown and John Forbes. It will be exciting to see the new energy they will bring to the Board!
The voters did their work last week. Now, back to work we all go – working hard to support these outstanding candidates as they seek election this fall and bring a refreshing change to our government, one that dumps Republican culture wars in the dustbin of history and works on the problems all Iowans face, regardless of party.
