Happy Flag Day!

The original 1777 flag was designed to represent the 13 original colonies. It had 13 white stars on a blue field and 13 alternating red and white stripes.

One of the first flag designs had the stars arranged in a circle, based on the idea that all colonies were equal.

In 1818, after a few design changes, the United States Congress decided to retain the flag’s original 13 stripes and add new stars to reflect each new state that entered the union.

Each time a state was added to the union, a star was added. Today, there are 50 stars, one for each state in the union, but the 13 stripes remain.

Scouting has been a lifelong passion for Judge Jerry Wiese. From earning his Eagle Scout rank as a young man to helping raise three sons who also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout (and welcoming an Eagle Scout son-in-law into the family!), Scouting’s values of leadership, service, and character have been woven throughout the Wiese family for generations.

Judge Wiese was recently honored with the Silver Beaver Award, one of the highest recognitions given to adult volunteers for distinguished service to youth. The award reflects decades of dedication to helping young people develop into capable leaders and engaged citizens.

His commitment to Scouting continues today as he serves as the coordinator for this year’s Wood Badge course. Wood Badge is Scouting’s premier leadership training program for adult volunteers, focusing on communication, teamwork, servant leadership, and building stronger programs for future generations of Scouts.

For Judge Wiese, Scouting has always been about more than earning badges — it’s about preparing young people to lead lives of integrity, service, and purpose. Those lessons have shaped not only his own journey, but the lives of countless others he has mentored along the way.

My youngest son just returned from a 2-year mission to Fiji! He had some good times and many struggles, just like all of us. He persevered and worked hard, and he enjoyed serving the Lord and having a positive impact on the lives of the wonderful people of Fiji. I’m so proud of him and his service! I love you son!
