DEPUTY GARY SAUNDERS
End of Watch: MAY 22, 1971
Deputy Saunders and his training officer were investigating a felony assault. They stopped to speak with several known gang members regarding their possible involvement. As the deputies exited their patrol vehicle, the men fled on foot.
While the training officer pursued one suspect, Deputy Saunders remained near the patrol car and was confronted by another suspect. During the struggle, the suspect gained control of Deputy Saunders’ service revolver and shot him.
The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended a short time later after deputies established a perimeter.
Deputy Saunders made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the community. Today, Century Station deputies continue to honor Deputy Saunders’ sacrifice by wearing the memorial band over our badge and a black tie.
