This map highlights the diverse geography of California, one of the most varied landscapes in the United States.
Stretching along the Pacific Ocean, the state features coastal plains and major metropolitan areas like San Francisco and Los Angeles. Moving inland, the fertile Sacramento Valley and San Joaquin Valley form the heart of California’s agricultural production.
To the east rises the impressive Sierra Nevada, home to the highest peak in the contiguous United States, Mount Whitney (4,418 m). Just beyond these mountains lies the extreme low point of North America: Death Valley, reaching about −86 m below sea level.
California also includes major desert landscapes like the Mojave Desert, while northern areas feature volcanic peaks such as Mount Shasta.

Rome sits at about 42° north latitude, slightly farther north than New York City at around 41° north. Naples is roughly level with Chicago, and much of northern Italy lies on the same latitudes as southern Canada.
What makes this surprising is that Italy is often associated with warm Mediterranean weather, while places at similar latitudes in North America can experience much colder winters.
The reason is largely the influence of the Atlantic Ocean and the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, which help keep much of Europe significantly milder than comparable locations across North America.
If Italy were moved west across the Atlantic, its northern regions would reach into parts of Canada, while Sicily would sit at a latitude similar to northern California. It's a reminder that latitude alone doesn't determine climate—ocean currents can completely reshape what a place feels like.
