Now, Lucas is at the forefront of a significant political battle—pushing for what could be one of the most extreme political gerrymanders of the 2026 election cycle. Alongside other Virginia Democrats, she’s championing a new redistricting map that, if passed by voters in an April 21 referendum, could give her party control of 10 out of 11 U.S. House seats in Virginia, based on the proposed lines.

While this plan is being hailed as a bold move to counteract Republican advantages in other states, it’s also sparking controversy. Critics argue that it’s a partisan gerrymander, designed to maintain Democratic dominance at the federal level. Today, SB1 is law after Governor Spanberger’s signature. That means higher wages and more money in the pockets of hardworking Virginians. This will Incrementally increase the state minimum wage to $15 per hour by January 1, 2028. I’ve always believed that if you work hard, you ought to be paid fairly. I’m proud to have been part of getting it done.

This budget focuses on affordability, fiscal responsibility, and long-term prosperity for hardworking Virginians.

✔️ $100 tax rebate for individuals, $200 for married filers
✔️ Higher standard deduction to put more money back in your paycheck
✔️ 3% raises each year for teachers and state employees
✔️ $200 million to help families facing higher health insurance premiums
✔️ Major investments in education, childcare, housing, transportation, and water infrastructure

We made responsible decisions to maintain structural balance while investing in the people and communities that make Virginia strong.

I’m proud of the work our Finance and Appropriations Committee did to deliver a budget that puts Virginians first.

Virginia moves forward because we invest in our people.
