Multiple fire departments from Dutchess County and the Highland Fire Department from Ulster County supported the Fairview Fire District for several hours yesterday at the former Hudson River Psychiatric Center site as fire consumed multiple structures, including the main building, in which portions have burned before.
Firefighters, both career and volunteer, worked seamlessly together in an effort to stop the rapid spread of fire. A valiant multiple hoseline interior firefighting strategy was executed in an effort to save the front of the main building, which was under renovation. Unfortunately, conditions rapidly deteriorated and firefighters were ordered to exit the building.
Fire operations continued on the overnight into this morning and operations will continue today. Smoke may continue to be present in the area of this incident today.
The Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response Mobile Command Unit was deployed to the scene and continues to serve as a Unified Command Post for all agencies operating. Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response personnel on scene included Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, County Fire Coordinator, Deputy Fire Coordinator - Battalions 2,5,7, Deputy EMS Coordinator - District 2, Emergency Logistics Coordinator, Emergency Logistics / Communications Coordinator, Public Health Emergency Preparedness Coordinator.
Media inquiries should be directed to the Fairview Fire District.
