On Juneteenth, we honor the day when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

It is a day to celebrate Black freedom, resilience, and achievement, while reflecting on the ongoing pursuit of justice, equity, and opportunity.

As we commemorate Juneteenth and participate in community celebrations, Byrd Barr Place will be closed on Friday, June 19, and Monday, June 22.

We encourage everyone to take time to learn, reflect, gather with loved ones, and honor the history, culture, and legacy that continue to inspire community power today.

We look forward to serving our community when we reopen during our regular business hours following the closure.

What does Juneteenth mean to you, your family, or your community?

Today, we celebrate every graduate whose hard work, curiosity, and determination brought them to this moment. Each diploma, certificate, and milestone tells a story of growth, resilience, and the courage to keep moving forward, even when the path was not always easy.

Graduation is not simply the end of one chapter. It is the beginning of new possibilities, new dreams, and new ways to contribute to the communities we call home. The knowledge, skills, and experiences gained along the way will continue to create positive change for years to come.

Last summer, 18th & Cherry became more than a street. It became a gathering place filled with music, laughter, conversation, and the kind of community connection that stays with you long after the day ends.

Families shared meals, neighbors reconnected, local businesses showcased their work, and artists filled the block with energy and creativity. Together, we celebrated the strength, culture, and spirit that make our community so vibrant.

On July 11, we're bringing that energy back for Byrd Barr Place's 3rd Annual Block Party. Join us for free food, live entertainment from Zach Bruce and Friends, local vendors, community resources, and a day built around connection and joy.

RSVP today and be part of this year's story.

Congratulations to Young Black Homeowners on the opening of your new office space.

What began as a vision to encourage, educate, and celebrate Black homeownership continues to grow into a powerful community resource. This new space represents more than an office. It is a place where knowledge is shared, relationships are built, and future homeowners can see themselves reflected in the possibilities ahead.

Young Black Homeowners has remained committed to creating pathways rooted in culture, education, and community connection, and this milestone reflects that dedication. We celebrate this achievement and the many futures that will be shaped within these walls.

Every neighborhood carries stories, wisdom, and experiences that deserve to be heard. The decisions that shape our communities should reflect the voices of the people who live, work, raise families, and build futures there every day.

For The Record invites community members to share their perspectives through a statewide survey. When people speak from lived experience, they help create a fuller picture of what communities need, value, and envision for the future. Your voice is not a footnote. It is part of the story that helps shape what comes next.

Take the survey at https://byrdbarrplace.org/for-the-record and make sure your experiences, priorities, and hopes are part of the conversation.
