The Instructions on Parting from the Four Attachments by Sachen Kunga Nyingpo

Oṃ svasti siddham!

When he reached the age of twelve, the great Sachen Kunga Nyingpo undertook a six-month practice of the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī. One day he had a vision, in which he actually saw, amidst a brilliant blaze of light, the holy Lord Mañjuśrī, orange in colour and seated on a jewelled throne, his feet placed flat upon the ground, his hands in the mudrā of explaining the Dharma, and with an attendant bodhisattva on either side.

Mañjuśrī spoke to him:

“If you are attached to this life, you are not a true spiritual practitioner;
If you are attached to saṃsāra, you have no renunciation;
If you are attached to your own self-interest, you have no bodhicitta;
If there is grasping, you do not have the View.”

When Sachen Kunga Nyingpo examined the truth of these words, he understood that the entire practice of the path of the pāramitās was condensed into training the mind in parting from these four attachments, and he attained a special conviction and insight into all the teachings of the Dharma.

《远离四种执著》

——萨迦·贡噶宁波

萨欠贡噶宁波在十二岁时修持文殊菩萨六个月。有一天，尊者亲见到文殊菩萨现前在光芒中，橙色身相坐在宝座上，双足平放地面，双手结說法印，左右各有一位菩萨。

文殊菩萨向萨欠开示道：

“若执着此生，则非修行人；
若执着轮回，则无出离心；
若执着自利，则无菩提心；
若执著生起，则丧失正见。”

尊者听闻此偈后，审察了其义理，了悟此偈所言涵盖了波罗蜜多道的全部修行内容，即修此法，并且对佛法生起了特殊的定解与智慧。

薩迦達欽法王二三事 —— 希阿榮博堪布

My Guru often told us stories about his Gurus, Thoga Rinpoche and Dagchen Rinpoche.

At that time, His Holiness was studying Buddhism at the Buddhist philosophy institute in Seshul under his teachers. Thoga Rinpoche, due to his advanced age, spent most of his time in retreat or teaching at the institute and rarely went out. Even when famous Lamas and Khenpos came to Seshul, he seldom made special efforts to seek empowerments or transmissions from them.

However, one year when H.H.Sakya Dagchen Rinpoche came to Seshul , upon hearing the news, Thoga Rinpoche told his disciples: "A tenth-level Bodhisattva has arrived at our doorstep. It would be foolish not to seek his teachings and blessings." He immediately led all the monks from Jangma Buddhist Institute to where Dagchen Rinpoche was staying to request empowerments and pray for his long life.

At that time, H.H Dagchen Rinpoche was only in his twenties, but when Thoga Rinpoche met him, he seemed to transform into a child. This highly respected teacher, nearly seventy years old, sat on the ground like a child in front of all his disciples, joyfully listening to Dagchen Rinpoche's teachings.

This left an incredibly vivid impression on my Guru, who had never seen his teacher behave this way before. Many years later, when he told us this story, he was still amazed, describing in detail how Thoga Rinpoche had suddenly sat on the ground and how he spoke with Dagchen Rinpoche.

It's no wonder His Holiness remembered it so clearly, given his deep reverence for his teacher Thoga Rinpoche. He said that although he longed to be close to his teacher at that time, he would never dare approach without being summoned. He would often walk to a place where he could see his teacher's residence and look from afar, hoping to catch a glimpse of his teacher coming and going. If he happened to be spotted by his teacher and was called over for a blessing, he would be overcome with joy.

To see such a revered teacher become like a grateful child in front of Dagchen Rinpoche inspired enormous faith in His Holiness.

Shortly after that, Thoga Rinpoche showed signs of illness, and his disciples were worried about how long he would remain in this world. Thoga Rinpoche comforted them, saying: "I know my own situation. I won't live much longer. You don't need to ask around, but if you must know to feel at ease, the tenth-level Bodhisattva is still in this world - go ask him."

So, some disciples representing the group traveled from Dzongsar to Tagong, where Dagchen Rinpoche was staying, to inquire about their teacher's lifespan. Dagchen Rinpoche said, "This year, even without prayers, he won't pass away. Next year, even if you recite the entire Buddhist canon a hundred times in prayer, he will not remain."

Indeed, Thoga Rinpoche did not pass away that year but showed signs of passing the following year.

All disciples in Thoga Rinpoche's lineage have a special, strong faith in H.H Dagchen Rinpoche. His Holiness often spoke about Dagchen Rinpoche's qualities in his teachings at the Larung Buddhist Institute, repeatedly praying for the long life of this great being who truly carried out the Buddha's work.

I remember one evening, His Holiness expressed his wish to speak with H.H Dagchen Rinpoche, who was in America, hoping to receive his blessings. He specifically checked the time difference to avoid disturbing Dagchen Rinpoche's rest. So they waited until very late to make the call.

I heard the two masters speaking very happily, praising each other's qualities, with Dagchen Rinpoche repeatedly requesting His Holiness to remain long in this world to protect the dharma and all beings.

In my memory, this might have been the only time His Holiness specifically sought teachings through a phone call. While I cannot fathom the realm of enlightened beings, I believe this special request for teachings and prayers must have had profound meaning and karmic connections.

Because of my teacher's lineage, I always felt close to H.H Dagchen Rinpoche and maintained deep faith in him. A few years ago, I finally had the fortune to meet him in person. Since he lived in seclusion and rarely received visitors, when we learned we had been granted special permission to see him, my gratitude was beyond words. I knew I was about to meet an extraordinarily accomplished master.

That day, His Holiness sat there, smiling as we entered. He perfectly embodied everything taught in Buddhism. The moment I saw him, all my conceptual thoughts dissolved, my body and mind became very soft, and my entire being gradually melted into his pure, kind, and compassionate radiance. Previously, only in my Guru presence had I experienced such feelings.

Dagchen Rinpoche gave us many precious teachings, performed long-life ritual blessings, and bestowed precious blessed items. He emphasized: "Throughout my life, my main practice has been compassion and praying to Avalokiteshvara, and this is how I guide others. I hope you will continuously practice compassion and recite Avalokiteshvara's mantra. Sentient beings suffer too much; never forget their suffering." These are the precious practice instructions from the master that I will remember and maintain without regression.

Buddhist scriptures speak of a wish-fulfilling jewel that grants all desires when sincerely prayed to. H.H Dagchen Rinpoche's passing into nirvana means the world has lost another such jewel. When I heard the news of his passing, I was deeply saddened, both for myself and for all beings like me wandering in samsara. Our merit is too thin.

However, although his physical form has dissolved into dharmadhatu, his warm light still remains around and within us. I believe that as long as we pray, we will surely receive his blessings. The masters will never abandon us.

According to the H.E Dhungsay Rinpoche, many years ago a disciple asked Dagchen Rinpoche, "Rinpoche, what signs will you show when you enter parinirvana?" The master replied, "There will be fireworks."

When Dagchen Rinpoche passed away, magnificent and vast rainbow lights indeed appeared in the Seattle sky, leaving observers in awe.

I saw this conversation and the photos of Seattle's rainbow-filled sky online. "There will be fireworks" - I couldn't help but smile, as tears blurred my vision.

With his inconceivable realization and endless compassion, H.H Dagchen Rinpoche used this magnificent "farewell" to demonstrate the value of Buddhist practice to the world, encouraging and inspiring us to maintain purity and kindness, and to have the courage to persist in practice even amidst delusion, disappointment, and setbacks.

希阿榮博堪布憶薩迦達欽法王二三事：
　　法王如意寶以前常常跟我們講起他的上師托噶如意寶和達欽法王的故事。
　　那時法王如意寶還在石渠江瑪佛學院依止上師修學佛法。
　　托噶如意寶因年事已高，大部分時間都在佛學院閉關或講學，平時幾乎不出門。
　　多有名的活佛、堪布到了石渠，他也很少特意前去求傳承、求灌頂。
　　但有一年達欽法王來到石渠，托噶如意寶得知消息後，對身邊眾弟子說：「十地菩薩現在到了家門口，我們不去向他求法求加持的話，實在太愚蠢了。」
　　說完，馬上帶領著江瑪佛學院的全體僧眾來到達欽法王下榻之處祈求了灌頂，並祈禱法王長久住世。
　　那時達欽法王年僅二十幾歲，托噶如意寶見到他，卻好像一下變回成孩童，德高望重年近古稀的上師，在所有弟子面前像孩子一樣快樂地坐到地上，聆聽達欽法王的開示。
　　這大概給跟在上師身邊從未見過如此情形的法王如意寶留下了極其鮮明的印象，很多年以後他老人家向我們講述這段往事時，仍然驚歎不已，仍然繪聲繪色：當時托噶如意寶怎樣一下坐到地上，怎樣和達欽法王說話。
　　也難怪法王如意寶記憶深刻，他對上師托噶如意寶是何等敬畏。
　　他說：那時雖然心裡渴望親近上師，可沒有上師的吩咐，也是萬萬不敢魯莽地跑到上師面前去。
　　所以他經常就走到能看見上師住處的地方，遠遠地望一望，希望能看到上師進出的身影，如果張望時碰巧被上師瞅見，叫過去摸摸頂，他簡直就要歡喜得不知如何是好了。
　　這般敬畏愛戴的上師，見到達欽法王，竟然歡快感激得像個孩童，這使得法王如意寶對達欽法王生起了巨大的信心。
　　那之後不久，托噶如意寶便示現生病，弟子們都憂心忡忡，不知上師住世的因緣還能維持多久。
　　托噶如意寶安慰他們說：「我自己的事情自己清楚，我的壽命不會長久了，你們也不用東問西問，十地菩薩現在還在人間，你們如果一定要問問心裡才踏實的話，就去問他。」
　　於是，一些弟子代表眾人從石渠趕到達欽法王當時所在的塔公地方，向他請示有關上師住世的問題。
　　達欽法王說：「今年，你們就算不祈禱托噶如意寶住世，他也不會示寂的。明年，你們就算念一百遍《大藏經》祈禱，他老人家也不會住世了。」
　　果然，托嘎如意寶當年沒有示現圓寂，轉頭到第二年才示寂。

　　托噶如意寶法脈下的弟子對達欽法王都具有特殊的強烈的信心。
　　法王如意寶在喇榮五明佛學院的課堂上，就經常給大家講述達欽法王的功德，並再再祈禱這位真正行持佛陀事業的大德長久住世。
　　記得有一天晚上，法王如意寶說想和遠在美國的達欽法王說說話，希望得到他的加持。
　　他老人家特別跟身邊的人確認了一下時差，說是別打擾到達欽法王的休息。於是，那天等到很晚才通上電話。
　　我在一旁聽見二位上師非常開心地談話，互相讚歎功德，達欽法王並一再祈請法王如意寶為護持佛法眾生長久住世。
　　在我的印象裡，法王如意寶通過電話專門求法，也許他一生中這是唯一的一次。聖者的境界我難以揣測，但我相信這次特殊的求法和祈請，一定有其深廣的密義和緣起。
　　因為上師的傳承，一直以來我在心裡都覺得跟達欽法王很親近，對他懷著深深的敬信。
　　幾年前，我終於有幸拜見到他。法王深居簡出，平時很少見客，所以當得知我們被特別開許覲見時，我內心的感激真是難以言表。我知道我將要見到的是怎樣一位世所罕見的大成就者。
　　那天，達欽法王坐在那裡，微笑地看著我們進來。他的身上完美地體現著佛法所教導的一切。
　　見到他的那一刻，我所有的分別念頓時消融了，身心變得非常柔軟，整個人慢慢融化在他純真、善良、慈悲的光輝裡。以前只有法王如意寶的在場，能讓我生起同樣的感受。
　　達欽法王給我們許多珍貴的開示，並念誦長壽儀軌作了加持，還賜予了殊勝的加持品。
　　他強調說：「我一生主要修持的是慈悲心和祈禱觀音菩薩，我也是這樣去引導別人的。
　　希望你們不間斷地修持慈悲心，持誦觀音心咒。
　　眾生太苦了，永遠不要忘記眾生的苦。」這是法王珍貴的修行竅訣，我會銘記在心並持守不退。
　　佛經中說有一種寶珠名叫如意寶，只要向他至誠祈禱便能滿足一切所願。達欽法王的示現圓寂，是這世間失落了又一顆如意寶。
　　聽到法王示寂的消息，我難過極了，為自己也為像我一樣在輪回中漂泊的眾生。我們的福報太淺薄了。
　　然而，法王的色身雖然融入法界，他的溫暖光明還依然在我們身邊和心裡，我相信只要祈禱就一定能感應到他的加持。上師們永遠不會捨棄我們。
　　據薩迦法王子說，多年前一位弟子曾問達欽法王：「仁波切，當您趨入無餘涅盤時，會給我們示現什麼樣
徵兆？」法王回答說：「會有煙花。」
　　達欽法王示寂時，西雅圖上空果然出現了絢爛廣闊令人歎為觀止的虹光。
　　在網路上看到這段對話和西雅圖虹光漫天的。「會有煙花」，我心裡不禁微笑起來，淚水一下模糊了雙眼。
　　達欽法王以他不可思議的證量和無盡的悲心，用這華麗的「告別」向世人展示著佛法修行的價值，鼓舞和啟發著我們，在迷妄、在失望和失敗的交替中仍然心懷純真和善意，仍然有堅持修行的勇氣。
