Summer makes putting food on the table even harder for Oklahoma’s families, who already face hunger at higher rates than the national average.

While several summer school students were enjoying a Gaining Ground field trip to a showcase event at Cain’s Ballroom, other students were enjoying a variety of activities at Ellen Ochoa Elementary.
One group was honing their acting skills during improv exercises and rehearsals for their play “Little Red Dasher and the Big Back Wolf’ in which the wolf keeps stealing grandma’s food deliveries from the front porch.
Another class enjoyed constructing tunnels for marble runs after they had finished their volcano experiments. Down the hall, another group of science students were building models as part of a geometrics study. Of course, several classes were busy reading or using iPads to complete assignments.
Ellen Ochoa hosts summer school for selected students from Boevers, Roy Clark, McAuliffe, Ellen Ochoa, and Rosa Parks. Jarman Elementary is also hosting summer school while Grove Elementary is home to this year’s EDP summer camp.

Families enjoyed story time and pizza at Ellen Ochoa Elementary today, led by Community Schools coordinators Mindee Bisdee and Daisy Pokhrel-Duran.
The activity was an extension of Union’s Baby Book Club, in which families bring their young infants for a story and refreshments. Only this time, siblings were invited to join in on the fun as well, “Just like Baby Book Club, but for your infants, pre-school, and school aged children!
Families from Boevers, Roy Clark, McAuliffe, Ellen Ochoa, and Rosa Parks followed along with their own copy of today’s book – “Rosa Explora ed Ciclo del Agua … Rosa Explores The Water Cycle” as Pokhrel-Duran read the story out loud in English and Spanish. Families will get to keep a copy of the book.
