On Juneteenth, we honor the freedom of enslaved African Americans and reflect on the consequences and lasting effects of slavery still present in our nation's criminal justice system. While Juneteenth commemorates freedom, the struggle against systemic racism and mass incarceration continues.
As we celebrate Juneteenth, we reaffirm our commitment to advocating for a more equitable justice system. Freedom is not complete until it is realized by all.

"It was really beautiful to see so many people have such a visceral emotional reaction about this injustice that we have been living with for so long." - Luke, Curtis Morris' best friend, on support from MAIP and co-counsel at Latham & Watkins.
Today, court has paused in Annapolis for Curtis Morris' Writ of Actual Innocence Hearing. Closing arguments will be made this coming August and we continue to prepare for the next step in Curtis' fight for justice. We also recognize the long wait that Curtis, his family, and his friends have endured seated in that courtroom day after day.
We stand with each of them every day until Curtis comes home.

In 2014, Curtis was just 21 years old when he was wrongfully convicted of murdering his girlfriend’s infant daughter—a child he loved deeply.
In April 2024, MAIP, alongside our co-counsel at Latham & Watkins, began post-conviction proceedings to challenge this injustice and seek the truth.
This month, Curtis is fighting for his freedom and his innocence in an Annapolis courtroom during a Writ of Actual Innocence hearing.
We stand with Curtis and his family as they continue this fight this month and every single day until Curtis comes home.
