π¨ CHC Demands Immediate Action on Long-Overdue Residence Maintenance Issues π¨
The Alice Campus Central Housing Committee (CHC) has noted with serious concern the lack of progress regarding the maintenance and repair of student residences.
Students were officially instructed to vacate their rooms by 12:00 on 15 June 2026 to allow maintenance and repair processes to take place during the recess period. However, several weeks have passed and there is little to no visible progress in addressing the reported residential issues. This has left many students frustrated and concerned about the condition of their accommodation upon their return.
As the Central Housing Committee, we stand firmly with students in demanding the urgent repair and restoration of all affected residences. It is unacceptable for students to be inconvenienced and required to leave their rooms for maintenance purposes, only for no meaningful work to be carried out within the expected timeframe.
We therefore call upon the relevant authorities to provide a clear update on the status of the maintenance process and to ensure that all outstanding residential issues are addressed as a matter of urgency. Students deserve safe, clean, and habitable living conditions, and we will continue to advocate for their interests until tangible progress is made.
Enough time has passed, and students are now expecting action rather than promises.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:βΌοΈ
From: CENTRAL HOUSING COMMITTEE (CHC)
To: Alice Campus Students
Subject: Residence Maintenance and Room Refurbishment Update
Date: 22 June 2026
Greetings, University of Fort Hare Alice Campus students.
Over the past few weeks, the Central Housing Committee (CHC) has been conducting residence walkabouts to identify and assess challenges affecting students' living conditions. During these inspections, we discovered that several rooms were in an unsatisfactory state, with some being excessively dirty and unsuitable for student accommodation. This was particularly evident at the East Campus residences, which were significantly affected by recent adverse weather conditions.
Following the inspections, CHC immediately reported these concerns to the relevant university departments and engaged with management to ensure that corrective measures were implemented. We are pleased to inform students that maintenance and refurbishment work commenced last week and is currently ongoing.
The cleaning, restoration, and painting of affected rooms remain a priority, with special attention being given to rooms impacted by mould and dampness, as these pose health and safety concerns. The maintenance teams have now begun work on the East Campus residences, and the process will continue until all identified rooms have been attended to.
As CHC, we remain committed to advocating for safe, clean, and dignified living conditions for all students. We will continue monitoring the progress of these interventions and engaging with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that the work is completed efficiently and to the required standard.
welfare remains our priority.
