𝐖𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐄 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐓𝐘 𝐈𝐍 𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄𝐁𝐄𝐑𝐆

As winter sets in across the Langeberg Municipal area, the risk of household fires increases due to the greater use of heating devices, open flames, and alternative cooking methods. The Municipality urges all residents to exercise caution and take proactive steps to prevent fire-related incidents during the colder months.

𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫
Winter conditions often result in the use of paraffin stoves, heaters, fireplaces, and candles, particularly during periods of power outages. These practices, while necessary for warmth and lighting, significantly increase the risk of accidental fires. Fires can spread rapidly, especially in dry indoor conditions or where flammable materials are present.

𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝
Residents are advised to avoid the following unsafe practices:
- Leaving candles or open flames unattended
- Overloading electrical sockets or using faulty wiring
- Placing heaters near curtains, bedding, or furniture
- Using unsafe or unstable heating devices
- Allowing children to play near heat sources

Most winter fires are preventable and are linked to unsafe household practices.

𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲
Informal settlements remain particularly vulnerable due to closely built structures and the use of highly flammable building materials. Fires in these areas can spread quickly and affect multiple households within a short period. Early prevention and community awareness remain critical, reducing fire incidents.

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬
The Municipality encourages all households to:
- Keep heating devices on stable surfaces
- Ensure proper ventilation when using paraffin or gas heating appliances
- Extinguish candles before sleeping or leaving a room
- Store flammable materials safely away from heat sources
- Always keep emergency numbers accessible

𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲
Fire safety requires collective responsibility. Residents are encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbours, particularly the elderly residents and those living alone, and to share information on safe heating practices during winter.

𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬
In the event of a fire, residents must contact Fire Services immediately. Quick reporting can help reduce damage and save lives.
- Call: 023 615 8911

The Municipality reminds all residents that winter fires are largely preventable. Through safe household practices and increased awareness, communities can reduce fire incidents and protect lives and property during the winter season.
