Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Mr. Paul Benjamin Thole, today officiated at the commissioning of completed Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects and the ground-breaking ceremony for the K7.2 million Chimtende Rural Electrification Project in Chimtende Ward, Katete District.
Speaking during the event, Mr. Thole described the electrification project as a transformative investment that will connect Chimtende Secondary School, Chimtende Primary School, Chimtende Rural Health Post, and surrounding villages to the national grid for the first time. He said the project will improve access to quality education and healthcare services while creating economic opportunities for local communities through increased productivity and business growth.
The Permanent Secretary commended the Government of the Republic of Zambia under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema for increasing the Constituency Development Fund, which has enabled the implementation of life-changing projects across the country.
Mr. Thole also praised Katete Town Council, led by the outgoing Council Secretary Ms. Kate Leo Mukonde, for prioritising projects that directly respond to the needs of local communities.
He noted that the commissioning and ground-breaking ceremonies demonstrate Government's commitment to people-centred development and improved service delivery.
The Permanent Secretary highlighted that over K45 million has been invested in community projects across Mkaika and Milanzi Constituencies since 2022. He further disclosed that more than K10.7 million has been disbursed towards secondary school and skills development bursaries, benefiting 1,169 learners, while K16.6 million has been invested in the procurement of overthe procurement of over 13,000 school desks.
Mr. Thole also revealed that 40 water schemes and boreholes have been constructed, benefiting approximately 22,000 people, while maternity annexes under construction will improve access to maternal healthcare services in rural communities.
He further announced that completed projects valued at K25,889,101.57 have been commissioned under the CDF. These include classroom blocks, staff houses, ablution facilities, water schemes, and the first-ever police station in Katete District at Kagoro. The newly commissioned Kagoro Police Station has been fully furnished with modern office furniture and equipment, enhancing the capacity of law enforcement officers to effectively deliver security services to the community.
Mr. Thole urged communities to safeguard the infrastructure being developed and called for continued transparency and accountability in the implementation of development projects.
The Chimtende Rural Electrification Project is expected to significantly improve living standards and contribute to sustainable socio-economic development in the area.

The outgoing Council Secretary, Ms. Kate Leo Mukonde, yesterday signed the Book of Condolences at Ephendukeni Palace, where the body of the late King Inyadezulu Mpezeni IV lies in state.
During her visit, Ms. Mukonde conveyed her heartfelt condolences to Inkhosi Mushawa of the Labanga Division of the Shawa Lineage. The Shawa Lineage comprises five kings (Nkhosis), including Inkhosi yama Khosi Mpezeni IV.
Ms. Mukonde joined Katete, the nation, and the people of Eastern Province in mourning the passing of Inyadezulu Mpezeni IV, whose legacy and contributions to the preservation of culture and tradition will be remembered for generations.

Katete Town Council today held a Stakeholders' Engagement and Orientation Meeting at Burning Bush Church aimed at updating members of the community on the Council's budget performance and the implementation of various Constituency Development Fund (CDF) programmes.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the Council to share progress made on CDF projects, bursaries, youth and women empowerment . Stakeholders were also invited to provide recommendations on various council matters affecting the district.
In addition, participants were oriented on the revised implementation guidelines for the Cash for Work programme, which is expected to commence soon.
Speaking during the meeting, District Commissioner Mr. Paul Ngongolo officially welcomed the new Council Secretary for Katete Town Council Ms. Lisa Mpasela, to Katete District.
In her remarks, Ms. Mpasela expressed gratitude for the warm reception and stated that she was pleased to assume office at a crucial period of the review of the implementation of the 2026 budget and review process is underway. She commended the participation of the business community, marketeers, and contractors, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder involvement in local development.
The Council Secretary further indicated her intention to visit local markets to appreciate their operations, understand the challenges faced by traders, and familiarize herself with the district's developmental needs as part of her orientation.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) in Katete District has today deployed
forty-four (44) Voter Education Facilitators (VEFs) to all twenty-two (22) wards in readiness for the commencement of voter education activities scheduled to begin on 1st June 2026.
The facilitators (VEFs) will be conducting voter education programmes across the district from 1st June to 31st July 2026 as part of the Electoral Commission's preparations for the 13th August 2026 General Elections.
During the two-month exercise, the VEFs will engage communities and provide vital information on various aspects of the electoral process, aimed at enhancing public understanding and encouraging meaningful participation in the elections.
Members of the public are encouraged to welcome, support, and cooperate with the facilitators as they carry out this important civic responsibility of promoting an informed and empowered electorate.

KATETE VOTER EDUCATION FACILITATORS COMPLETE TRAINING AHEAD OF 2026 GENERAL ELECTIONS.
Voter Education Facilitators (VEFs) in Katete District today successfully concluded a five-day intensive training programme with a final assessment conducted in preparation for the August 2026 General Elections.
The assessment process included both written evaluations and practical presentations aimed at testing the facilitatorsโ communication, presentation, and public engagement skills. This was done to ensure that the facilitators are fully prepared to effectively deliver voter education messages to communities across the district.
The trained VEFs are expected to be deployed on 30th and 31st May 2026 and will officially begin voter education activities on 1st June 2026. The exercise is intended to promote voter awareness, civic understanding, and informed participation in the electoral process ahead of the 2026 General Elections.

KATETE DISTRICT HAS DEVELOPED A CAMPAIGN TIME TABLE.

Katete District has developed a campaign time table for political parties and aspiring candidates ahead of the upcoming General Elections.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring organized and well-coordinated campaign activities throughout the district.
The schedules have been developed through consultations with stakeholders to encourage peaceful campaigns, improve coordination, and minimize possible conflicts during the campaign period.
