π―οΈπ₯ Candles create atmosphere β but they also create fire risk π₯π―οΈ
Open flames can spread quickly if left unattended, knocked over, or placed too close to curtains, bedding or decorations.
To help keep your home safe this winter:
β
Never leave candles unattended
β
Keep candles away from anything that can burn
β
Blow candles out before leaving the room or going to bed
β
Keep candles out of reach of children and pets
β
Consider safer alternatives like battery-operated candles
A relaxing night in shouldnβt end with a fire truck outside π¨βππ
Be fire safe this winter.

π³π₯ Unattended cooking is the leading cause of house fires in NSW π₯π³
Most kitchen fires start the same way β someone walks away βjust for a minute.β
If you need to leave the kitchen:
β
Turn the stove off
β
Move tea towels and items away from heat
β
Keep an eye on whatβs cooking at all times
A hot pan only takes moments to start a fire.
Cold dinner beats a house fire every time π¨βπ
Be fire safe this winter.

πΎπ₯ Wheat bags & heat packs can be a fire risk if overheated π₯πΎ
They might seem harmless, but overheating wheat bags and heat packs can cause them to smoulder or catch fire β sometimes long after being heated.
To help stay safe this winter:
β
Always follow the heating instructions
β
Never overheat them or reheat too quickly
β
Allow them to cool between uses
β
Check for burnt smells, scorch marks or damage
β
Never leave heating appliances unattended
If it smells burnt β donβt use it π¨βπ
Be fire safe this winter.

ππ₯ Charging batteries safely matters π₯π
Phones, laptops, e-bikes and other rechargeable devices all generate heat while charging.
Charging them on beds, doonas or pillows can trap that heat against fabric β and lithium-ion battery fires can start fast.
To help stay safe:
β
Charge devices on a hard, flat surface
β
Keep chargers and batteries off bedding
β
Avoid charging devices unattended overnight
β
Use approved chargers where possible
A soft bed and a hot battery are not a good mix π¨βπ
Be fire safe this winter.

π Meet Firefighter Brendon! π
Brendon joined Fire and Rescue NSW in August 2025 after always wanting to be part of the community and help people in times of need. Since joining the crew at Abermain 202, heβs quickly become a valued member of the team.
Outside of the station, Brendon works as a Rail Operations Scheduler. He enjoys the camaraderie of the crew, learning new skills, and being able to put those skills into action to help the community.
When heβs not working or responding to calls, Brendon enjoys getting outdoors with his family, fishing, travelling, and exploring new places.
One interesting fact about Brendon is that he has completed 20 Variety Bash events β with the last few completed in a 1985 Ford Falcon alongside his wife Abby π
Brendon says one of the best things about the local area is the strong community feel, from local schools and businesses through to sporting teams and the people who make the community what it is.
Serving the community is important to him because it gives him the opportunity to help protect the same community his family lives in.
His advice to anyone thinking about joining Fire & Rescue NSW?
βIf itβs something that has interested you, get in and have a go β itβs a great team to be a part of.β
A few quick favourites from Brendon:
πΊ Favourite TV show: Anything sport
π Favourite food: Satay Kwai Teoh
π Favourite sports teams: Knights, Jets & Sydney Sixers
Brendon is also a proud family man, with his wife Abby and their three sons β Xavier, Harvey and Nash.
Thanks for your service to the community, Brendon π¨βππ₯
