The public says preserve them. The premier says cut them down. That’s not leadership – that’s arrogance. The breathtaking arrogance is not just in cutting the trees down – it is in pretending that the public’s objections simply do not matter. For when a government starts treating century-old trees as disposable, it starts treating public opinion the same way.
Do our politicians really believe that a century-old tree can simply be replaced with a sapling and a press release? Government by bulldozer and the arrogant hope that prize money will distract everyone is what happens when political arrogance meets a chainsaw.
Our politicians don’t see trees, they see obstacles to a photo opportunity in a golf brochure.
Apart from our grandchildren, very few of us will be around to see the new saplings develop into beautiful natural monuments. A sapling is not a replacement for a mature tree any more than an apology is a replacement for wisdom.
Is there no-one in parliament, of any political persuasion, who is willing to resist this bullying, all for a golfing vanity project?
