🐎 Attention neighhh-bours. It’s official. The horses are on their way back to Breakout Creek / Purruna Pari!

Over the coming weeks the horses will make their way from off-site agistments to their new purpose-built area on the southern side of the river.

The Stage 3 redevelopment works included constructing the 800 m timber-fenced agistment, as well as upgrading the Apex Park horse arena with new yards and vehicle access, which will facilitate safer movement and handling of the horses.

Lockleys Riding Club Inc have a long history with this special area, and it will be great to see the horses back in their new home!

Stay tuned for more updates and to hear when the horses have returned.

🌱 We’ve updated our Coastal Planting Guide to highlight Fire Wise plants. Look out for the Fire Wise symbol to know when considering what to plant.

The types of plants you choose, their distances from buildings, and your home and garden maintenance can help with bushfire preparedness.

While no plants are fireproof, lower flammability plants can be a better choice as they usually have higher moisture retention, low oil content, higher salt content, or less dead material.

Some native grasses are also summer active, meaning they stay greener in summer when other grasses are dry.

🐾 Have you been hearing more scurrying, thumping and hissing lately?

It’s that time of year where people are noticing their four-legged neighbours in their gardens, trees and even roofs. In metropolitan Adelaide chances are it’s a common brushtail possum or ringtail possum.

But, did you know there are other possums that call our state home?

The five possum types found in South Australia include the:

🐾 brushtail possum
🐾 ringtail possum
🐾 western pygmy possum
🐾 little pygmy possum
🐾 eastern pygmy possum.

🌷 Almost 5,000 rare and threatened plants are headed for our coastal dunes, thanks to a partnership between Green Adelaide, Trees For Life (SA) and the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre.

These rare plants have faced challenges in the past from urban development and weeds, but are slowly returning to parts of Adelaide, where they belong.

A huge thank you to all the amazing volunteers who joined us at North Haven on 31 May for our most recent planting.

This Fire Wise planting project is helping to inform the future of bushfire preparedness.

25 of these planting pods in the Cape Jervis coastal reserves have Fire Wise plants in them. Only three of the pods burnt in the Deep Creek fires and in all burnt pods the plants have survived.

South Coast Coastal Conservation Officer, Corey Jackson explores the effect the fires had on the plants in the area that are being analysed as part of the Fire Wise Project.

All the plants have been grown in the Green Adelaide supported Fleurieu Coast Community Nursery by volunteers from the Fleurieu Environment Centre.

The project is supported by the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife and has received grant funding from the Australian Government through the Preparing Australian Communities local stream.

🌏 Today is World Environment Day and this year’s theme is a global call for climate action.

Adelaide is facing growing challenges as climate change intensifies.

At Green Adelaide - alongside our partners and the public - we’re working towards a cooler, greener, wilder and more climate-resilient metropolitan South Australia.

In 2024 – 2025 we saw:

πŸ—‘οΈ 264 tonnes of trash, debris and sediment removed from the River Torrens catchment
🦊 22,496 hectares of pest animal control
🌱 99,160 natives planted to rewild 777 hectares
🌳 57 community and council projects worth $3.2m seeded with grants
πŸ’š 118 enviro-volunteer groups supported
🌼 54 nature-based events delivered

But there’s still so much more to do.

Thank you to everyone who has been on this journey with us so far.
