Flashback Friday: Bickford’s Building

Designed by architect Daniel Garlick in 1878, this handsome warehouse and office building was built of Mitcham freestone with Italianate cement dressings for Bickford & Co in 1879-1880.

William Bickford arrived in the colony in 1839 and soon opened the first druggists shop in Adelaide. Most of the credit for the company’s success must be given to Bickford’s wife, Ann Margaret, who was left with five children and the management of the business after her husband’s premature death in 1850. When their sons were old enough, they were brought into the business.

They ventured into the manufacturing and wholesaling of pharmaceutical supplies, and later the celebrated Bickford’s Lime Cordial. The company was also supplying veterinary supplies, and manufacturing and selling cosmetics, soaps and eucalyptus oil.

In the 1950s, the company moved their manufacturing operations from the city to a premises in West Croydon.

The building has had several uses and occupants since, including the Anglican Church Office.
