Fifty years on the rails and still going strong — long-serving Metro Trains employee Frank has seen Melbourne’s north-west evolve from a small town centre into a thriving suburban hub in his time on the tracks.
Frank began his railway journey at what was then Spencer Street Station in 1975. He's since worked as a gatekeeper on the Upfield line, become a part of the St Albans signalling team, before heading out to Watergardens when it opened in 2000.
Frank’s favourite part of the job is working with colleagues he considers friends and he also enjoys the variation he gets in shift work. Thank you to Frank for playing an important part in keeping Melbourne moving!

Meet our favourite gardening tool - an elevated work platform known as "the spider."
The spider helps us keep our network safe. Our Infrastructure team use it to clear vegetation along the rail line, improving line of sight for signals and keeping our tracks free of hazards.
We're glad real spiders aren't this big! 🕷

While our rail network runs across land, sometimes our teams need to hit the water to run some checks. ⛵
Recently our team completed structural investigation works at Maribyrnong River bridge pier from a boat, with waterway permits in place.

Following successful public trials, Transport Victoria is now switching on contactless payments anywhere you can use myki on trains!
This means more train lines will have contactless technology available to tap and go.
Plan ahead and check which train lines have been switched on at the Transport Victoria website.

💙Play on, for Neale – Big Freeze 12💙
Metro is proud to once again support the Big Freeze campaign in 2026.
Across our network, we’ll be sharing tribute imagery at key stations, encouraging frontline staff to wear Big Freeze beanies, and making a contribution in honour of Neale Daniher’s legacy and the ongoing fight against motor neurone disease.
Check out our frontline staff Josh and Leanne below showing their support. We’re proud to play a part in raising awareness and funds for this important cause.
