The bike pictured above is no longer a e-bike, it's a motorbike capable of speeds well over 60km/h.
If your kids are riding around on these home made motorbikes, they are committing multiple traffic offences. If they hold learners permit, they are risking the opportunity of obtaining a car licence should they be prosecuted.
A reminder to all of those who use e-bikes that there are strict laws which dictate what is not allowed to be used on public roads and if they don't meet these points then they are classed as a motorbike:
A motorised bicycle is not classed as a bicycle if:
The motor is not an auxiliary source of power (a person must still be able to propel the bicycle via pedals without the motor operating).
The motor's power output exceeds 200 watts (whether or not the motor is operating) unless it is an EPAC (Electrically Power-Assisted Cycle) (not exceeding 250 watts).
note - an EPAC can be propelled by the motor up to a maximum of 6km/h without the rider pedalling.
If your e-bike meets any of the above points, it is now defined as a motorcycle which would result in the rider committing multiple offences.
If you know of anyone riding around on one of these please contact Moorabbin Highway Patrol on 95566140 or submit an anonymous Crime Stoppers Report 1800333000 or crimestoppers.com.au

At approximately 2:30 pm on the 21st of June members from Moorabbin Highway Patrol observed a male riding an electric motorbike along Beach Road in Brighton.
The rider travelling at 90-100km/h failed to stop for a red traffic light at South Road and continued at this speed along Beach Road. Police attempted to intercept the rider who failed to stop.
Later that evening members from Bayside Police observed the motorbike parked up at the shops in Sandringham. The original police members who observed him riding came along and identified the male rider from earlier. The male a 31 year old from Sandringham did not hold a licence.
His motorcycle was impounded for 30 days, he will be charged on summons for failing to stop on police direction, unlicensed riding, using an unregistered motor vehicle and a myriad of other traffic offences.
If you know anyone using of these motorcycles in the Kingston or Glen Eira, Bayside areas please submit an anonymous report to Crimestoppers 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au

Hey everyone, just a quick heads-up from Moorabbin Highway Patrol—we’re still getting quite a few reports about electric motorbikes particularly around Brighton, Bentleigh and Chelsea.
A lot of these are Surron or Stark brands (or sometimes DIY versions) and just so you know, they’re actually classified as motorbikes. That means you need the same licence and rego as you would for a car or regular motorcycle. Some of these homemade ones can actually hit speeds of 60-80km/h.
We’ve been hearing about young teens riding these bikes through local parks and reserves, sometimes pretty close to other people and kids.
They often ride them recklessly through traffic, which is a pretty big risk for everyone involved. Honestly, it’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured.
If you happen to know someone doing this—maybe your neighbour, a local kid, or someone from school—feel free to give Moorabbin Highway Patrol a ring at 95566140, or if you’d rather stay anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800333000 or crimestoppers.com.au .
