Community Options Australia believes everyone deserves the right to a healthy future and the opportunities this affords.
However, many of Australia’s First Peoples are denied the same access to healthcare that non-Indigenous Australians take for granted. Despite a decade of Government promises the gap in health and life expectancy between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians is widening.
We actively support Indigenous Australians right to access health care in the location of choice.
• The outcomes are better when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are in control of their own health.
• Community-controlled health services are holistic, appropriate, and accessible.
• Primary health care and prevention must be culturally safe to avoid hospital admissions and premature deaths.
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be able to access the care they need, provided by a doctor they trust, close to where they live.
• Long-term primary health care service delivery strategies must be informed by the evidence base supporting where services are needed most.
The launch of the 2022 Close the Gap Report will be live streaming via Reconciliation YouTube from 11:30am (AEDT) Thursday 17 March https://www.youtube.com/user/ReconciliationAus
