Yesterday we welcomed the Mayor, CEO and representatives from City of Cockburn (WA), home to the Henderson shipyard and the Australian Marine Complex. Together with the Osborne Defence Precinct, these locations stand as two of Australia’s most significant defence and shipbuilding hubs, playing a vital role in strengthening the nation’s maritime capability.

With significant state and federal investment transforming both regions into globally competitive defence and maritime centres, growth is accelerating at an unprecedented pace. In this environment, collaboration between councils like ours has never been more important.

By building stronger relationships, we can advocate more effectively for our communities and ensure that this once-in-a-generation defence investment delivers lasting local benefits, from infrastructure and jobs to new opportunities for business, as manufacturing capacity and supply chains continue to expand.

At 21, a chance encounter at a job expo quietly set Emily Downs on a path to becoming a Local Legend. Nine years on, Emily is still a proud volunteer with the State Emergency Service Enfield Unit.

For Emily, volunteering is all about showing up when the community needs it most, whether that’s during a storm, a rescue or simply lending a hand. “What I love the most as a volunteer is the ability to help the community in ways others don’t have the opportunity to,” Emily says.

But it’s not all flashing lights and urgent callouts. Behind the scenes, it’s about training, teamwork and building lasting connections. “I enjoy learning new skills, brushing up on the ones that need work, and the lifelong friendships you can make,” Emily shares.

Like many volunteers, stepping into that first callout can feel daunting. Emily admits it can be the biggest hurdle, but the strength of the crew makes all the difference. “There is always someone who can help you if you are unsure of what to do.”

Through it all, Emily’s time with SES has shaped the way Emily approaches life beyond the unit. “It has changed my life by always having a wanting to help the community mindset.”

For Emily, the reward is simple. “I do this as I love it. It gets me out of the house, I get to see my friends, make new ones, and help the community when it is needed most.”

On behalf of the entire PAE community, thank you to a local legend who is always ready to help.

On the weekend we held our annual Get Shady tree giveaway at the Parks Library. More than 200 residents joined us to select a native tree to plant in their gardens at home. Since 2022 the Get Shady program has provided 1,640 trees to our residents and businesses to plant on their property. We’re doing this to encourage residents, businesses, schools, and strata groups to plant more trees on their properties to help green our city and reach our Tree Canopy Target (increase of 35% by 2050).

This target is detailed in the draft Urban Greening and Biodiversity Plan, which along with the draft Living Environment Plan, Integrated Water Management Plan and Climate Response Plans we are currently seeking your feedback on. If you would like to learn more about the actions we will take to protect and enhance our natural environment, respond to a changing climate and reduce adverse environmental impacts, head over to our engagement portal, Participate PAE to read the draft plans and join the conversation.

On Thursday 25 June, our Living Environment team are also running a workshop to provide an overview on the suite of draft Environment Plans, with an opportunity for you to ask questions and provide feedback on environmental issues important to you. Book your tickets at events.humanitix.com/city-of-pae-living-environment-plans-community-feedback-workshop and please come prepared to provide your feedback.

Please note that as with all consultations you need to provide your feedback either in person or via the portal: participate.cityofpae.sa.gov.au/living-environment ...comments left on social media cannot be included.
