Some of the brightest minds in space exploration have walked our stages in recent years. For International Women in Engineering Day, we're spotlighting three World Science Festival Brisbane guests rewriting what's possible. Christina Koch, Katherine Bennell-Pegg and Tracy Drain, who all bring decades of space engineering expertise from NASA and the Australian Space Agency.
Three different paths into space and one clear message: there's room for everyone in STEM π©βπππ©βπ¬

βοΈ Tonight is Winter Solstice, where the Southern Hemisphere reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun, giving us our shortest day and longest night of 2026.
But here's the silver lining: from here, every day gets a little brighter βοΈ And tonight is one of the best nights of the year to look up and see Jupiter shining bright in the western sky after sunset, with Mars not far behind π

Some of Queensland's most remarkable fossil discoveries start with everyday people π This is one of them.
Found by collector Pippa van Gilst in 1990 and brought to Queensland Museum (Queensland Museum Kurilpa) in 2017, this fossil was immediately thought to be new to science. What no one expected was that similar undescribed specimens were quietly sitting in collections in Brazil and South Africa.
The Esk fossil plant along with specimens from Brazil and South Africa have now been described as a new species of seed fern, Umkomasia fleurdelysia, named after its similarity to the heraldic Fleur-de-Lis symbol βοΈ
