⭐🐾 Adoption update 🐾⭐

After adopting Tofu earlier this year, we have received an update from his new mum Caitlin!

"I just wanted to send you a quick message to say thank you so much for helping us adopt Tofu. We honestly couldn’t imagine our home without him already.

He has settled in so well and has become such a loved part of the family. He’s full of personality, keeps us laughing constantly, and is doing really well adjusting to his new home. You can tell how much care went into looking after him before he came to us.

We’re so grateful to you and everyone at Wollongong City Council for all the work you do helping animals find their people. Thank you again for bringing Tofu into our lives — we absolutely adore him."

Choosing whether your cat stays indoors or outdoors is a personal decision, and the good news is there’s another option that can offer some of the benefits of both.

Indoor cats are often protected from risks like traffic, fights, parasites and disease, and many live longer as a result. Outdoor access, on the other hand, can give cats extra stimulation, exercise and opportunities to explore their surroundings. Both approaches have positives, and what works best can depend on your cat’s personality, your home and your neighbourhood.

⚖️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲‑𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Many cat owners are now choosing a balanced approach that allows their cats to enjoy the outdoors safely. This can include:

- supervised time outside in the yard or on a balcony
- leash or harness training for short outdoor walks
- secure outdoor enclosures or “catios”
- limited, structured outdoor time rather than free roaming

These options let cats experience fresh air, sunshine, sights and sounds, while helping reduce risks like wandering, injury, neighbour concerns and the chance of a cat being mistaken for a stray.

🏡 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀

A middle‑ground approach can help keep cats closer to home, reduce nuisance complaints, and lower the likelihood of cats being impounded. It also gives owners more confidence that their cat is getting both stimulation and protection.

🐱 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲

There’s no single right answer. What matters most is that your cat is safe, enriched and identifiable. Making sure your cat is microchipped and registered means if they do wander or are found roaming, they can be returned home quickly and avoid unnecessary impoundment.

Trix was adopted back on 13th February this year by Shelley and her family, and we’re so happy to hear that she has settled in so beautifully. From the sounds of it, she has slipped right into family life as if she’s always been there. 🥰

She’s having the best time with her new doggy sibling, Sunny the Labrador, and her three human siblings — plenty of companionship, playtime, and love all around!
Trix is embracing everything her new life has to offer, from visits to the dog park to fun days out at the beach. It’s wonderful to hear that she’s not only enjoying these adventures but also showing what a well‑behaved and lovely girl she is.

A big thank you to Shelley and her family for opening their hearts and home to Trix and giving her such a happy, fulfilling life. Stories like this remind us exactly why we do what we do. 💕

Desexing your cat isn’t just about preventing surprise litters; it plays a big role in protecting your cat’s health and reduces the number of unwanted kittens in the community.

Cats can breeding from as young as four months old, and things can escalate quickly. A healthy female cat can have 2–3 litters in a year, with an average of 4–6 kittens per litter. That means just one un-desexed cat can have as many as 18 kittens in one year!

Within a short time, this rapid cycle can contribute to:

- more kittens needing homes (there are already plenty looking for one)
- increased pressure on rescues and impounding services
- increased number of feral cats in the community

🐾 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀

Desexing also helps reduce behaviours like roaming, fighting and loud calling, which can put cats at risk of injury and increase the chance of them being picked up or impounded.

🏡 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝘀, 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆

Desexed cats are more likely to stay close to home, experience fewer health risks, and avoid unwanted litters, helping Council focus resources on reunification and care rather than managing overpopulation.

Desexing is a simple, proven step that makes a real difference for cats, owners and the wider community.
