When Maddie got her diagnosis at 19 years old, she was left to figure everything out on her own.
โI'd had to do a lot of my own research ... I had to hunt around myself and, with that limited understanding, educate the people around me.โ
Her family were left searching for answers too.
โWhen Maddie was diagnosed, my wife and I were sitting looking at each other, on a daily basis, thinking โwhat do we do?โ,โ said her dad, Craig.
That was until they found Epilepsy Queensland.
โIt was almost like putting the puzzle pieces together,โ Maddie said.
โTo know that thereโs someone there who really gets it โ I donโt even have the words to describe the relief,โ said Craig, "Suddenly we had somewhere to turn; it was like we'd been rescued."
Unfortunately, Maddieโs experience isnโt unique.
This tax time, you can help ensure more Queenslanders affected by epilepsy receive the support, information and understanding they deserve.
No donation is too small - all funds raised help provide our free support services to families just like Maddie's

We're continually inspired by the incredible people in our community who find creative ways to support the work we do.
Events like the upcoming O'BrienCo Race Day are a wonderful example of how businesses, community groups and individuals can come together, have fun, and make a meaningful difference for people living with epilepsy and their families.
Every fundraiser, workplace event, community gathering or special occasion hosted in support of Epilepsy Queensland helps create greater awareness, connection and impact. We're so grateful to those who choose to champion our cause and bring others along on the journey.
This event in particular honours a very special individual, Lauren 'Loz' Smith, who tragically lost her life to SUDEP. Her legacy lives on through her family, friends and wider community and is a reminder to us all about the impact we can make when we we honour those we love through action, connection and community.
Thank you to O'BrienCo and everyone who continues to find ways to support the 50,000 Queenslanders impacted by epilepsy๐

Epilepsy is often misunderstood as โjust seizuresโ.
But for people like Maddie, it means fear, rejection, isolation and loss of independence.
Itโs planning every day around the risk of something you canโt actually control.
Weโre sharing Maddieโs story to show what epilepsy really looks like, and the difference a little help can make.
