Her Voice: Airdrie firefighter says trust starts before the call.
Marla Carbone says one lesson has stayed with her in the fire service: failure is not the opposite of success — it is part of what builds confidence. 🚒❤️
Carbone, a 2nd Class firefighter with the City of Airdrie, spoke about preparation, mentorship, crew trust and what it means to serve others, both in and out of uniform.
Her message for women and girls is simple: you do not have to become someone else to belong.
This story is part of Her Voice, a weekly summer feature series highlighting women whose work, leadership and service help shape Airdrie and the surrounding region. Her Voice is presented bySeCan and Kumon.

Today we celebrated a major milestone at the Airdrie Fire Department as Class 4 officially graduated from recruit training.
Over the past 10 weeks, these 11 recruits have dedicated themselves to learning the skills, knowledge, and teamwork required to serve our community. Through long days of training, challenging scenarios, and countless hours of hard work, they have demonstrated the commitment and professionalism expected of Airdrie firefighters.
This morning's graduation ceremony provided an opportunity to recognize their achievements alongside their friends, families, and their brothers and sisters in the Airdrie Fire Department. The support of loved ones plays an important role in every firefighter's journey, and we were proud to celebrate this accomplishment together.
Congratulations to all 11 graduates. We are excited to welcome you to your platoons and look forward to watching your careers grow as you begin serving the residents of Airdrie.
Please join us in congratulating Class 4 on this outstanding achievement!

🚒 Airdrie Fire Department’s Class 4 recruit group is taking on a 57-storey stairclimb in Calgary for a cause tied closely to the fire service.
The recruits will climb 1,370 steps at Brookfield Place on June 14 in support of Wellspring Alberta and firefighter cancer support.
Garret Williams, a probationary firefighter with Airdrie Fire, said the risk firefighters carry does not stop them from answering calls.
“Every time you jump on the truck and go out the doors, it could be the last time you go out those doors,” Williams said.
Deputy Fire Chief Simon Bradley said the fundraiser carries “a much deeper meaning” inside the fire service.
“Firefighters face a significantly higher risk of occupational cancer, so for many of our members this isn’t an abstract cause,” Bradley said.

Crews are attending a house fire in the 100 block of Luxstone Road. On arrival the crew out of Chinook Winds Station found a working fire in the attached front garage and were able to quickly bring it under control.
All occupants are out safe with no injuries reported.
There was a lot of smoke generated with calls from neighbouring communities.
Crews will be on scene working on hot spots with a portion of Luxstone Road closed.
It’s far too early to determine cause or provide an estimate of damage.
2000 - crews are clearing the scene and the road should be opening up for the neighbouring homes.

Airdrie Fire Department Responds to Multiple Weather-Related Incidents
This morning, the Airdrie Fire Department responded to a complex series of weather-related incidents following widespread power outages affecting the community.
At approximately 8:00 a.m., Airdrie Fire crews were dispatched to multiple simultaneous events. On Willowbrook Road, firefighters responded to reports of several individuals trapped in elevators as a result of the power outages. At the same time, crews were dispatched to two separate reports of smoke inside a residential building on Tower Lane Drive and a commercial building on Edmonton Trail. Both incidents were initially dispatched as structure fires due to smoke but no fires were located. No injuries have been reported and all residents have been allowed to return.
Despite the challenging circumstances and concurrent nature of these events, Airdrie Fire crews effectively managed all incidents with the assistance of mutual aid partners from Rocky View County Fire Services, including Engine 107, and Crossfield Fire Department, including Engine 154.
The Airdrie Fire Department would like to thank our partners at Red Deer Emergency Services Dispatch for their support in coordinating these complex and rapidly evolving incidents.
The cause of the smoke-related incidents are believed to be electrical in nature and remain under investigation.

Today, crews from Airdrie Fire Department responded to calls involving ducklings trapped in storm drains in our community.
While these situations were easily resolved, it is important for us to share a reminder that storm drains can pose serious hazards — not only to wildlife, but also to people.
We appreciate residents who took the time to report these situations without attempting a rescue on their own.
A few important safety reminders:
• Absolutely do not attempt to enter a storm drain or lift grates yourself.
• Keep children and pets away from drain openings.
• Use caution when stopping near roadways to check on wildlife.
• If you encounter trapped animals, contact 911 in an emergency or call Airdrie 311 to help in determining the right resource
Thanks to the teamwork of our crews and concerned citizens, several ducklings were safely rescued and reunited with their mothers today.
Calls like these are a good reminder that public safety often includes helping the smallest members of our community too.

One year ago today, on a very rainy day, we broke ground on the new Highland Park Fire Station and Training Centre. Today, the project remains on time and it is certainly starting to look and feel like a fire station on the inside and out.
This is an exciting chapter as we grow to meet the needs of this amazing community. We look forward to seeing this all come together for our opening later this year.

At approximately 10:25 a.m. today (Friday, May 1, 2026), Airdrie Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire on Baywater Street in Airdrie.
When crews arrived, they found a single-family home with flames visible through the roof. Firefighters from Airdrie, working alongside our partners at Rocky View County Fire Services, acted quickly to bring the fire under control and successfully prevented it from spreading to neighbouring homes.
The primary residence sustained extensive damage. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
We want to thank our partners for their support during this incident:
- Alberta Health Services Emergency Medical Services
- Royal Canadian Mounted Police
- Airdrie Municipal Enforcement
- FortisAlberta
- ATCO
We’d also like to recognize the staff at Nose Creek Elementary School, located across the street from the incident. Staff implemented an indoor recess as a precaution, and there was no risk to students at any time.
Thank you to our crews and partner agencies for their fast response and teamwork today.
