📢 Lanark County is seeking volunteers to help with its Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) Program.

See the details below.

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS!

Lanark County is currently running a Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) program, to support businesses across the county. Over the summer and early fall, we will be interviewing businesses people in the area to determine what they need to remain successful and to grow further.

We will then use gathered data to create an Action Plan to help support the real needs of businesses in the area. This data is extremely important, as it will also inform further Economic Development strategic plans for Lanark County, as well as new grant applications, events and new project development, depending on the needs and opportunities identified.

Lanark County is seeking for volunteers who are active in the community to help us conduct the interviews in their area.

Volunteers need to attend one training session. The first training is on June 12 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Lanark County Administration Building (99 Christie Lake Road, Perth). Please register by emailing Tim Woods (details below) prior to the day.
Following the training, volunteers will be asked to work in pairs and volunteer to interview at least two or three businesses over the next few months. Each interview will last about an hour. More information is available at www.lanarkcounty.ca/grow, and interested businesses can sign up there as well.

Later in the process (January) volunteers will be invited to read through the data to help create an action plan. Attendance at that event will be optional, but it will be an interesting, creative, and important part of the process – and there will be some very good food for us at that event!

If you are interested or have questions about this volunteer opportunity, please contact Tim Woods, BR+E Coordinator, at [email protected]
There will be additional trainings later, so feel free to reach out to Tim if you can’t make the first one, but you’d still like to be a volunteer.

⭐ 2026 Community Awards Spotlight – Bonnie McBain ⭐

We continue our spotlight series by focusing on Bonnie McBain, an Exceptional Volunteer recipient this year.

Bonnie McBain has always shown up for her community. As a young mom, she volunteered with her sons’ baseball and soccer teams, and today she continues to give generously of her time at Naismith Memorial Public School, where she helps children learn to read several times a week.

Her support extends far beyond the classroom — she is a familiar and trusted presence at school events, fundraisers, and anywhere an extra set of hands is needed. Her willingness to step in, quietly and without hesitation, has made her invaluable to the school community.

A statement from Mayor Lowry as National Indigenous Peoples Day approaches this Sunday, June 21.

Statement from the Office of the Mayor – National Indigenous Peoples Day

As we approach National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, we honour the rich histories, living cultures and enduring contributions of First Nationals, Inuit and Métis Peoples. Here in Mississippi Mills, we are grateful to be learning more each year about the deep Indigenous presence in this region and the relationships that shaped it. This day invites us all to listen, to learn and to celebrate the cultural vitality of Indigenous Peoples during this season of light.

I encourage everyone to join our community celebration, ‘Celebrating Solstice Together,’ on Saturday, June 20 at Riverfront Estates Waterfront Park.

Mississippi Mills All My Relations and Ginawaydaganuc Village
with support from the Municipality and the Government of Canada, have created a full day of culture, learning and shared experience. It begins with a guided paddle of the Mississippi River with Elder Larry McDermott, Algonquin of Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation and Knowledge Keeper Chuck Commanda, Algonquin of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation. Drumming, storytelling, children’s activities, workshops, music and teachings continue throughout the afternoon and evening.

Events like this strengthen the friendships and trust we continue to rebuild with Indigenous partners and neighbours. I hope to see many of you there as we welcome the Summer Solstice and celebrate the vibrant Indigenous cultures that enrich our community.

Sincerely,

Mayor Christa Lowry
Municipality of Mississippi Mills
