Police in Altona responded to an apparent opioid overdose, a traffic stop that led to drug charges and another call involving fentanyl possession during a series of incidents reported in the last month or so.

According to the Altona Police Service, officers were called after a concerned citizen reported seeing a man having difficulty walking near a local business last week. When police arrived, they found the man unresponsive and believed he was experiencing an opioid overdose. Officers administered naloxone, and he gradually became responsive before paramedics took him to hospital.

Earlier in May, police arrested two people during a traffic stop in Altona.

The Altona Police Service says officers found unstamped to***co and a small quantity of fentanyl during the stop. A 28-year-old man from Altona and a 29-year-old woman from Morden were arrested and charged with drug possession.

Police had another fentanyl-related encounter on May 19th after officers were called about an intoxicated man who was unable to care for himself.

Officers located the 31-year-old, detained him and found a small amount of fentanyl in his possession.

Police said he was charged with possession of a controlled substance and later turned over to family members because he remained highly intoxicated.

In Manitoba, rules apply to cyclists and also when towing a bike trailer.

While there are no specific maximum trailer width or length laws for bicycles, cyclists must strictly adhere to helmet mandates, lighting requirements, and safety guidelines for passengers

Please be alert and prepared

We are currently under an orange level tornado watch. You may have seen a notification from your preferred weather app, or heard about it on the radio.

What does that mean?

Well, it means that conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes.

It means that you should be prepared, in the event that a tornado warning should be issued later today. If you hear the outdoor warning siren, or receive an alert from the mass notification system or your preferred weather app, or if you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris, flying debris, or other threatening weather approaching, take cover IMMEDIATELY.

Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. If you are visiting the park or other outdoor recreation space near to the Millennium Exhibition Centre and hear any of those warnings, head to the MEC for shelter.

If you aren't sure if you will hear the siren or otherwise be aware of alerts, be sure to sign up to receive emergency alerts at https://altona.ca/p/emergency-management.

Please be aware!

There have been a few fox sightings around town this week, including in the Redwood Bay area today.

Foxes are generally shy, and avoid human contract wherever possible, but are drawn into residential areas by unsecured garbage, outdoor pet food, and compost piles, as well as small prey animals. Fox encounters are usually harmless if people keep their distance and avoid feeding the animals.

We encourage you to:
- keep garbage and compost secured
- avoid leaving pet food outdoors
- never feed foxes
- supervise your small pets when they are outdoors
- make noise if a fox approaches too closely

If you happen to spot wildlife that appears aggressive, sick, injured or orphaned, you can contact Manitoba Conservation at 1-800-782-0076.
