Blackfoot Confederacy Invites Families to Participate in Placenta Ceremony

Blackfoot Confederacy Tribal Council Health Department is seeking participants for an upcoming Blackfoot Placenta Ceremony, a cultural gathering designed to honour babies, families, and the sacred Blackfoot teachings surrounding birth and the beginning of life.

Scheduled for June 22, 2026, the ceremony will bring together Blackfoot families from across the Confederacy to reconnect with traditional teachings, ceremony, and Elder guidance. The gathering recognizes the cultural significance of birth and provides an opportunity for families to honour their children through practices rooted in Blackfoot knowledge and traditions.

Organizers are inviting Blackfoot mothers and families who have retained their baby’s placenta and are interested in participating in a culturally grounded ceremony. The event is intended to support the revitalization and continuation of traditional teachings while creating space for families to strengthen their connection to culture, community, and identity.

5th Annual Siksikaitsitapi Pow Wow Returns to Whoop-Up Days in Lethbridge

Blackfoot Confederacy is proud to welcome dancers, singers, families, and visitors to the 5th Annual Siksikaitsitapi Pow Wow taking place August 19–20, 2026 at the Lethbridge & District Exhibition Trade and Convention Centre as part of the annual Whoop-Up Days celebration.

Now entering its fifth year, the Siksikaitsitapi Pow Wow has become a significant gathering that celebrates the strength, culture, and traditions of the Blackfoot people while bringing together participants from across Blackfoot Territory and beyond. The event continues to grow each year, offering increased opportunities for dancers, drum groups, and community members to come together in a good way.

Grand Entry begins daily at Noon with free admission available until 3:00 p.m.

This year's pow wow will feature more than $90,000 in prize payouts, including dance contests for all age categories, Golden Age, Senior Adult, Adult, Teen, Junior, and Tiny Tot dancers. Committee specials and outgoing princess specials will also be featured throughout the event.

This years Drum Contest will once again bring together some of the top drum groups, with payouts totaling $30,000, including a first-place prize of $10,000.

The pow wow is led by an experienced team of Blackfoot cultural leaders and pow wow staff, alongside respected judges, arena directors, emcees, and drum leadership from across Blackfoot Territory.

In addition to the pow wow, visitors attending Whoop-Up Days can enjoy several Indigenous-led events throughout the week, including:

• Indigenous Marketplace – August 19–20
• Siksikaitsitapi Music Showcase, Drum Competition – August 19
• Indian Relay Races – August 20–22

Rally for Treaty Rights and Unity | Wear Red | Free Event | Everyone Welcome

The Blackfoot Confederacy Chiefs Society is calling on Blackfoot Confederacy members, Treaty Nations, allies, and the public to join a Rally for Treaty Rights and Unity on Sunday, June 14, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at The Confluence (Former Fort Calgary).

The rally comes at a time when discussions surrounding Alberta's future and potential separation are taking place across the province. For First Nations, these conversations cannot occur without recognition of the Treaties that form the foundation of the relationship between First Nations, the Crown, and all who live on these lands.

Hosted by the Blackfoot Confederacy Chiefs Society, the rally will bring together leadership from the Blackfoot Confederacy, Treaty 6 Nations, and Treaty 8 Nations to reaffirm the importance of Treaty rights, Treaty relationships, and the continued recognition of First Nations as rights holders and partners in the future of this region.

The event will serve as a public demonstration of unity among First Nations and those who support the spirit and intent of Treaty. Speakers will share perspectives on the significance of Treaty, the responsibilities that come with these agreements, and the importance of ensuring First Nations voices remain central in discussions that impact their lands, peoples, and future generations.

The Blackfoot Confederacy Chiefs Society encourages attendees to wear red as a visible show of support and solidarity.

This rally is an opportunity for people from all backgrounds to stand together in support of Treaty, respect, and Nation-to-Nation relationships. It is a chance to send a clear message that Treaty rights matter, First Nations voices matter, and that unity remains stronger than division.
