Historic expansion of the ICAO Council and Air Navigation Commission 📣
Ecuador became the 128th country ICAO Member State to ratify the 2016 amendments to Articles 50 (a) and 56 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation on 12 June 2026, reaching the threshold required for the amendments to enter into force.
With Ecuador's ratifications, both Protocols took immediate effect, paving the way for expanded representation in ICAO's governing and technical bodies.
What does this mean?
The ICAO Council will grow from 36 to 40 Member States and the Air Navigation Commission from 19 to 21 members. More States and experts in both bodies will enable broader representation and stronger global cooperation for the safe, secure and sustainable development of global air transport.
